Girmit descendants urged to remember history and value present

A Girmit researcher called on descendants to confront history with honesty and recognize the work, culture, and contributions made on leased lands.
It is painful to hear, but we need to know our history and face it as well because only then will we be able to respect and appreciate our present.. This was highlighted by Girmit researcher Kirti Sharma, who says that our ancestors did not inherit any property.. Sharma says whatever they built was through their own hard work, and they did not cheat anyone to grab land.. She says they worked on leased land and contributed to the economic development of the country.. Sharma further says that the indentured labourers did not exploit anyone to build their lives.. The Girmit researcher says the people preserved their culture and respected the religion and traditions of their fellow citizens..
