Ginobili: Wembanyama needs little from Spurs legends

Manu Ginobili says Victor Wembanyama has “the whole package” at 22 and “doesn’t need much” from Spurs legends, as San Antonio’s Finals push draws familiar faces from both franchises.
The San Antonio Spurs’ run toward their sixth NBA championship has brought a familiar kind of noise to the arena—championship memories in the stands.
In the crowd for games, former Knicks players have shown up, including Patrick Ewing and Walt “Clyde” Frazier. On the Spurs’ side, the names carry decades: David Robinson, Tim Duncan, and Manu Ginobili.
Ginobili spent his entire NBA career in San Antonio, playing from 2002 to 2018. Drafted by the Spurs with the No. 57 overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft, he became a central piece of four of the team’s championship runs, sharing the floor with one or both Spurs big men during that era.
Asked about the newest version of the franchise—featuring Victor Wembanyama, the 22-year-old French superstar—Ginobili didn’t talk about what Wembanyama needs from legends so much as what he already has.
“After you see the type of players that we have, maybe next year, or in two years, but seeing them grow and get together that quick and mature like that, it’s amazing, so I’m thrilled,” Ginobili said.
Shaquille O’Neal, an ESPN “Insider the NBA” analyst, pressed him on what role Robinson and Duncan could play in helping Wemby sharpen his game. Ginobili described how that help works—showing up in the right moments, then giving the young star space once the season starts.
“They come often. They come often to the team, especially in the summer. Once the season starts, we leave them space. They are always a resource … That young man doesn’t need much. He has the whole package. He’s incredible, and he’s so mature for being 22,” Ginobili told ESPN’s crew before Game 2.
The Spurs dynasty that Ginobili helped fuel is part of the comparison. David Robinson won two championships before his career ended, and both came with Tim Duncan as his teammate. Duncan later added three more titles without Robinson, aided by stars including Ginobili, Tony Parker, and Kawhi Leonard.
Still, Ginobili’s point is that Wembanyama may already understand the game at a level that makes the usual “seasoned advice” less necessary. Even so, the idea that he could benefit from guidance—just not because he’s lacking—sits under the surface of everything he said.
The current Spurs roster, Ginobili suggested, is built for that kind of growth. He pointed to wise draft decisions that have added depth around Wembanyama, including Devin Vassell, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper.
With this young Spurs team earning its first trip to the NBA Finals. the spotlight has shifted from past rings to immediate experience. Ginobili’s message from the arena was clear: Wembanyama may not need much from the legends. but the legends still came—because seeing the next chapter is its own kind of victory.

So basically Wemby don’t need nobody lol
Wait I thought Spurs legends already weren’t allowed back in the building? But Patrick Ewing and Walt Frazier are there too?? Kinda wild that Ginobili says he “doesn’t need much” like that’s not still a lot 😂
Manu said they come in the summer then leave space when season starts, which sounds like… that’s just coaching? Or maybe it’s like conditioning? I dunno, I’m just confused why Shaq is asking him like he’s the GM. Also Wemby is 22 so he should already know everything right?
I like Wemby but I feel like these “whole package” quotes are always hype until playoffs. Spurs always had good stories tho, Duncan Robinson? (not sure if that’s the right guy) Anyway Ewing showing up with Frazier makes me think the Knicks are secretly scouting or something. Spurs fans are gonna eat this up, I get it.
