Giants RB avoids serious harm after scary hit

play

New York Giants running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. suffered an apparent injury during his team’s preseason Week 3 game against the New York Jets.

The injury occurred as Tracy was tackled at the end of an 8-yard run with just over seven minutes remaining in the second quarter. The 26-year-old lowered his head while trying to power through contact and hit the crown of his helmet hard on the shoulder of Jets safety Jarius Monroe.

Tracy’s neck was seemingly compressed as a result of the hit.

Tracy remained down on the ground after the play, and his Giants teammates immediately signaled for the training staff to come tend to him.

Tracy received medical attention on the field. He was eventually able to get up and walk off the field slowly, under his own power. After that, he headed to the locker room for further evaluation.

John Harbaugh told reporters following the Giants vs. Jets game that Tracy had suffered a stinger. The coach did not provide an update on the running back’s status moving forward but noted none of the injuries Giants players suffered during Friday’s game were serious.

The Giants did not provide an in-game update on Tracy’s injury, but Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reports Tracy cleared the NFL’s concussion protocol. The 26-year-old missed the remainder of Friday’s exhibition contest but he was able to return to the sideline during the second half.

Before leaving the game, Tracy generated 37 yards and a touchdown on four carries. He was replaced by Najee Harris upon exiting.

Giants RB depth chart

Tracy is currently in a three-way battle with Harris and Devin Singletary for the Giants’ top backup job. Below is a look at the team’s pecking order at running back, according to its unofficial depth chart.

Tracy entered the offseason favored to win the backup running job. However, the Giants’ decision to sign Harris shortly after Tracy missed a key block that led to Giants starting quarterback Jaxson Dart getting lit up in the preseason opener muddied the waters in the running back room.

If Tracy is sidelined any amount of time by injury, that may open the door for Harris to usurp the No. 2 running back role.
