Ghana and South Korea are strengthening ties in maritime education, aiming to leverage expertise from Busan’s KMOU to boost regional capacity in West Africa.
Ghana and South Korea are exploring deeper collaboration in maritime education and ocean development following high-level discussions between a Ghanaian delegation and the leadership of the National Korea Maritime & Ocean University (KMOU) in Busan.. The engagement formed part of a maritime regional tour and brought together officials led by Ghana’s envoy and KMOU President, Ryoo Dong Keun, to discuss areas of mutual interest in maritime training, logistics, shipping, and marine resource development.. KMOU, widely
regarded as one of South Korea’s leading institutions in maritime education, was highlighted during the meeting for its role in supporting the country’s transformation into a global maritime powerhouse.. Speaking during the engagement, the Ghanaian delegation underscored Ghana’s strategic position as a maritime nation and its potential to serve as a gateway to West Africa and a regional hub for maritime education and logistics.. The delegation also emphasized the importance of strengthening Ghana’s role within
the Gulf of Guinea maritime space.. A key focus of the discussions was the Regional Maritime University (RMU) in Ghana, which serves several West African countries including Liberia, Sierra Leone and The Gambia.. Both institutions explored potential areas of cooperation, including student and faculty exchanges, maritime safety education, marine environmental protection, shipping and logistics development, and broader maritime human resource training.. The KMOU leadership reportedly expressed strong interest in the partnership and indicated readiness to
deepen institutional collaboration.. President Ryoo Dong Keun also expressed a desire to visit Ghana and the Regional Maritime University to advance discussions on future cooperation.. The talks further touched on emerging global maritime challenges, including climate change, ocean sustainability, carbon reduction and security in the Gulf of Guinea.. The Ghanaian delegation noted that maritime diplomacy is increasingly evolving beyond government-to-government relations, stressing the growing importance of academic and institutional partnerships in shaping long-term cooperation..
