George Clooney urges Callum Turner as next Bond

George Clooney says Callum Turner would be “the perfect guy” to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond, praising Turner as “tall and handsome and charming and British.” Clooney directed Turner in 2023’s The Boys in the Boat, and Turner has played coy about the rum
When George Clooney talks Bond, he doesn’t sound like he’s speculating. He sounds like he’s handing someone a key.
Clooney. who directed Callum Turner in the 2023 film The Boys in the Boat. has now thrown his personal weight behind Turner as the next James Bond. The 65-year-old says he hopes Turner lands the role. telling The Hollywood Reporter: “I hope Callum ends up being the next Bond. I think he would be a great Bond.”.
Clooney’s reasoning is blunt and specific: Turner, he says, is “tall and handsome and charming and British,” making him the “perfect guy to do it” as a replacement for Daniel Craig.
The timing of Clooney’s push matters because the franchise is in a rare, high-stakes moment. The next Bond film is being directed by Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve. and the script is written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. It is also, in a practical sense, still searching for its lead star.
Turner, for his part, has stayed cautious—almost teasing. Clooney’s pick came as rumours around potential replacements have continued to swirl. with contenders including Jacob Elordi. Harris Dickinson and Slow Horses star Jack Lowden. But when Turner was asked about becoming Bond himself. he replied that he knows no more than anyone else. saying: “I know as much as you do – really. I know as much as you do.”.
Asked further, Turner said he “laughed and looked down at his sneakers,” then added: “I am not going to comment on that.”
He then leaned into the absurdity of the chatter. explaining: “I will tell you what’s so funny about the Bond thing: Even your best friends ask you. people text you that you haven’t spoken to for 10 years – and you know nothing!” He continued: “It is such a weird thing of something happening and nothing happening at all. I genuinely know nothing. I just find it quite amusing.”.
Clooney’s endorsement lands against the backdrop of Daniel Craig stepping away from the role. Craig starred in five Bond films starting with Casino Royale in 2006. In 2019, he announced he was stepping down, and 2021’s No Time to Die was his final outing as 007.
Since then, casting speculation has been relentless—at one point reaching Idris Elba, a former contender who addressed the issue of who should play Bond earlier this week. Elba said he never viewed himself as a “legit” option because the character has always been played by white men.
Elba told GQ: “I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing,” adding, “James Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it.”
He also suggested that long-time fans might not accept the choice. “I think, in realistic terms, some markets just don’t go for that,” Elba said. “Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won’t [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.”.
On whether a Black actor should be cast. Elba’s position was different from his earlier stance—he said it’s not vital. He told GQ: “Bond is so unrealistic. so a hint of reality is good. but let’s not try and make it woke. I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond.”.
Underneath the casting debate is a franchise in transition. The next Bond film will be the first since Amazon MGM acquired full creative control of the franchise in February 2025.
Right now. Turner is still answering the questions with jokes. and Clooney is answering them with conviction—insisting Turner is already. in every way that matters to him. the “perfect guy” for Bond. If the rumours ever turn into an official announcement. it will be one of those rare entertainment moments where the pitch comes from someone who has already worked directly with the would-be star.
