When your smart camera spots something, the next step is usually automatic notifications or nothing at all. Starting today, Google wants to change that by letting Gemini in Google Home turn your own camera prompts into triggers for real automations.

Users who signed up for early access to Gemini on Google Home can now create automations that start when compatible cameras detect whatever “visual insights” you describe in a prompt. Google announced the new capabilities in a Nest Help forum post. outlining that Nest Cams and other “Gemini Built-in” cameras can use a wide range of events as starting points for custom routines.

The examples Google shared make the intent clear: nearly any event can act as a trigger. That includes things like Amazon deliveries, car doors left open, and raccoons spotted in certain areas. The practical takeaway is that visual events can be used to start any Google Home routine—so instead of only reacting to predefined detections. you can write the behavior you want the system to watch for.

Google’s description includes scenarios such as having the app send a notification when a camera sees you’ve left your car door open. or flipping floodlights on when a raccoon is spotted poking around garbage bins. Put simply. it suggests that if Gemini can recognize the visual condition from a camera feed. it can become the trigger for a routine.

The update isn’t only about cameras. Google also says the Gemini experience in Google Home is getting smaller, everyday improvements. As of the latest update. Gemini should be better at understanding plain-language commands like “make the living room a little warmer.” The company also says you can string multiple actions together in a single request more reliably. and that basic tasks like setting timers and alarms should feel a little faster.

Gemini isn’t the only part of the Home app in line for a tune-up. Google says the Home app’s widgets should be more responsive as well. And if you want access to the new Gemini features. Google lays out the sign-up path: open the Google Home app. tap your profile picture. then go to Home settings → Early access.

  1. I read it like it’s turning prompts into routines, but isn’t that already what smart homes do? Like my lights already know when someone’s home… unless the raccoon thing is new.

  2. Wait, “visual insights” like car door open?? That seems kinda backwards, because if the camera can see it, why can’t it just alert me every time without guessing what I meant in the prompt. Also sounds like Google is making everything more complicated for no reason.

  3. This is exactly how it starts… next thing you know Gemini is deciding what I’m doing and turning on floodlights in my yard. Raccoons and deliveries are not the scary part, it’s the fact they’re training it to interpret prompts. I don’t want my Home app reading my camera feed like it’s a person.
