Fulham talk with Arbeloa as Silva exit reshapes coaching hunt

Fulham talk – Fulham have held talks with former Real Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa as they search for a successor to Marco Silva, who left Craven Cottage after five years. The next appointment could come with Mourinho’s return to the Bernabéu now already set in motion.

Fulham’s coaching search is already moving fast—quietly, but decisively—after Marco Silva’s departure left a clear vacancy at Craven Cottage.

The club has held talks with former Real Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa about the possibility of succeeding Silva. Silva left Fulham after five years at the end of the season, and has since been announced as José Mourinho’s replacement at Benfica.

Arbeloa’s own timing is tight. His six-month tenure at the Santiago Bernabéu was ended on Tuesday, paving the way for Mourinho’s return. Arbeloa had been appointed at Real Madrid on January 12, following the sacking of Xabi Alonso, and he had previously worked as the club’s reserve team coach.

For Fulham. the move is happening after Silva’s exit earlier this month—and after a season defined by consistency rather than drama. The Portuguese was appointed by Fulham in 2021 and led the club to the Championship title in his first campaign in charge. He then moved the club into a period of consolidation in the Premier League.

Under Silva. Fulham built momentum with a run that began with an 11th-place finish in 2025. a season that also set a new club record in the Premier League by winning 54 points. The west London club repeated that 11th-place finish this term. pushed over the line by a final-day 2-0 win over Newcastle United. In each of the seasons beneath Silva’s steady hand. Fulham finished 10th. 13th. 11th and 11th in the Premier League.

Arbeloa brings a different kind of résumé—one rooted in European success as a player and a sharp. almost unforgiving start as a coach. A right-back in his playing career, he won two European Cups with Real Madrid. He was also part of the Spain side that won the World Cup and two European Championships between 2008 and 2012. winning 56 caps in all.

As a club player, he appeared in the Premier League for Liverpool and West Ham United, and played for Deportivo la Coruna in Spain.

His first game in charge of Madrid came with an early shock: a Copa del Rey exit at the hands of second-tier Albacete. During his tenure. Real Madrid exited the Champions League at the quarter-final stage with a 6-4 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich. The team finished the season second, eight points behind title-winners Barcelona.

The Fulham vacancy is now framed by two departures and one return: Silva’s move to Benfica to replace Mourinho, and Mourinho’s return to the Bernabéu after Arbeloa’s run was cut short on Tuesday.
