The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, and by then the Tallahassee regional won’t be theory anymore—it’ll be a decision. No. 10 seed Florida State begins its NCAA Tournament run at home, welcoming No. 2 Coastal Carolina, third-seeded Northern Illinois and No. 4-seeded St. John’s.

FSU opens play against the Red Storm at 3 p.m. on ACC Network, with the Seminoles starting Bryson Moore on the mound. St. John’s is expected to counter with RHP Liam O’Leary, a first-team All-Big East selection.

Florida State is entering the postseason with a 38-17 record (19-11 in ACC play). The Seminoles will be hosting a regional for the third season in a row and the 38th time overall. On the mound, the pitching staff holds a 4.05 ERA with 211 earned runs allowed on 394 hits, 580 strikeouts and 203 walks in 469.1 innings.

The regional’s other matchup sets up a very specific kind of pressure. No. 2 seed Coastal Carolina enters with a 37-21 record and arrives as last year’s national runners-up. The Chanticleers are averaging .269 at the plate with an ERA of 5.08.

Coastal Carolina’s sole victory in the matchup came in the program’s last meeting in 2015 to avoid a sweep.

Northern Illinois brings its own stakes. No. 3 Northern Illinois is 35-17 and is making its second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance—and its first in 44 years—after winning the MAC. The Huskies’ batting average is .279 with an ERA of 5.65. Florida State has met Northern Illinois just once before this weekend: a 7-1 Tallahassee victory on April 8, 1971.

St. John’s is the Big East champion, entering the regional with a 33-24 record. The Red Storm are hitting .279 with a 5.37 ERA. Against Florida State, St. John’s is 2-1 in the series, with the only previous meeting described as a three-game series from March 4-6, 2016.

St. John’s and Coastal Carolina have met seven times, with the Chanticleers leading the all-time series 4-3. St. John’s is 1-0 vs. Northern Illinois all-time.

  1. I saw “No. 10 seed” and thought they weren’t even supposed to be there lol. Isn’t St. John’s the one that’s always good? I’m confused but I hope FSU wins.

  2. Bro Bryson Moore on the mound… I feel like pitching decides everything in these games. Also the article said Coastal Carolina has a 5.08 ERA like that’s bad right? So shouldn’t FSU just steamroll them in the regional bracket or am I mixing up the matchups.

  3. These “regionals” sound like they’re just home games with extra steps. 3rd season in a row at home?? That’s wild. Also they said 38-17 and like 72 home runs, so basically they’re gonna hit everything out of the park right… unless the weather’s trash in Tallahassee. ACC Network is the only place I can stream it too, so of course 🙃
