The Great American State Fair was supposed to feel like a nationwide celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. But by the time organizers reached for their first wave of star power in Washington. D.C. the lineup was already showing stress—performers pulling out one by one. saying they had been led to believe the event was nonpartisan.

Just days after organizers unveiled a star-studded entertainment slate for Freedom 250’s Great American State Fair in Washington. D.C. a growing number of artists withdrew. Several performers said they had been misled about the event’s political associations. even as organizers insisted Freedom 250 is intended as a unifying. nonpartisan commemoration of the nation’s semiquincentennial.

Among the acts publicly backing out were Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, Young MC, Morris Day and the Commodores. McBride said she had been offered an opportunity to perform at what was presented as a nonpartisan event celebrating all 50 states, then concluded that characterization was misleading.

Michaels said the event had changed into “something much more divisive” than what he had originally been told when it was presented to his team. Other performers also cited concerns about being publicly affiliated with a political movement or party.

As more artists left. roughly two-thirds of the originally announced lineup has now withdrawn. leaving the event’s public-facing promise and its political optics in direct conflict. Critics have described Freedom 250 as a MAGA-aligned celebration. while organizers have defended it as a nonpartisan effort and said performers remain free to decide whether to participate.

President Donald Trump entered the fight as the roster continued to unravel, proposing he could replace the departing acts himself. In a Truth Social post. Trump derided the performers as “Third Rate Artists.” He also claimed he draws larger audiences than Elvis Presley did “in his prime. ” and suggested transforming the fair into an “AMERICA IS BACK Rally.”.

The controversy lands as Trump has promoted a series of high-profile America 250 events ahead of next year’s anniversary celebrations. Organizers have defended the mission of Freedom 250 and reiterated that the event is meant to bring people together, not split them along party lines.

Even with the withdrawals, some names remained on the expected schedule. Artists including Vanilla Ice and Flo Rida are still expected to appear.

The situation now turns on a simple question that runs through every withdrawal and every presidential reply: whether Freedom 250 can keep its nonpartisan frame intact once the politics of the moment are already stamped onto the stage.

  1. I don’t even get it… they said it was nonpartisan but the artists got “misled” and pulled out. Isn’t that their job though to check who’s involved? Like come on.

  2. Wait I thought Freedom 250 was like for the 250th anniversary not politics. But if it’s “MAGA-aligned” then how are they surprised people leave? Also Trump offering to replace the artists sounds like a publicity stunt and not really fixing the problem.

  3. Freedom 250 should be neutral but everyone’s always turning everything into left/right. Martina McBride leaving though? I saw one clip say it was basically a Trump rally and I’m like… yeah that tracks. If Trump really steps in himself then I guess it’s basically confirmed, right?
