Free webinar set for Limerick parents on May 28

THE transition from primary school to post-primary school is a significant milestone in a young person’s life. While this transition can bring excitement, independence, and new opportunities, it can also bring uncertainty and worry for young people and their families. Most young people will need time to adjust as they adapt to the social, emotional, and academic changes that come with starting secondary school. For many young people, post-primary school will feel very different from primary school. The school environment is often larger, busier, and

less familiar. Your child may now have multiple teachers, larger class groups, different classrooms for each subject, and a more demanding timetable to manage. There are also increased academic expectations, including more homework, greater organisational demands, and new experiences such as exams, lockers, and subject choices. They may be adjusting to new friendship groups, meeting peers from different backgrounds and schools, and

trying to find where they fit within a new environment. Some children settle socially quite quickly, while others may need more time to build confidence and feel comfortable in their new surroundings. It is important to remember that this adjustment process looks different for every child. This transition can bring a wide range of emotions for young people. They may feel excited about these new experiences, while also feeling nervous about the unknown. They may miss familiar teachers, friendships, and routines from primary school while

also looking forward to greater independence and new opportunities. Taking the time to listen to your child and acknowledge both positives and challenges of the transition can help them feel understood. Although the transition to post-primary school can feel challenging at times, it also provides opportunities for growth and development. Young people often develop increased independence, confidence, resilience, organisational skills, and social awareness during this stage. They may also discover new interests, subjects, hobbies, or friendships that help shape their identity and sense of self

as they grow. As a parent, maintaining open communication and showing interest in your child’s experiences can make a significant difference. Taking time to listen to your child and acknowledging both the positives and the challenges of the transition can help them feel understood and supported. Encouraging independence while continuing to provide reassurance and guidance can help build their confidence over time. Although adjustment can take time, with support, most young people settle into their new school environment successfully at their own pace. The Primary
