France vs Paraguay at 100-degree Philadelphia: Mbappé penalty

France vs – In a sweltering Philadelphia kickoff with temperatures near 100 degrees, France and Paraguay played a tense, defense-heavy first half before Mbappé converted a long-delayed VAR-awarded penalty. The winner moves on to face Morocco in the quarterfinals at Gillet

PHILADELPHIA — The heat hit Lincoln Financial Field before anyone could settle into the match. With temperatures at kickoff nearing 100 degrees, France and Paraguay still needed only one thing to separate in the World Cup round of 16: a moment.

For France, that moment arrived after a VAR review. Kylian Mbappé was deemed to have been fouled in the penalty area after advantage was initially given. After a long delay, he stepped forward to convert the penalty kick — his 19th career World Cup goal.

The stakes are immediate and unforgiving. The winner of France vs. Paraguay will face Morocco in the quarterfinals at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Mbappé has been carrying France through the tournament, leading the team to four wins in four matches. He has six goals — scoring two three times — and enters the round of 16 one behind Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race. Mbappé’s 18 World Cup career goals rank second in history, two behind Messi’s 20th World Cup goal vs. Cape Verde.

The match began with pregame ceremonies after lengthy buildup, and “Frozen” star Idina Menzel sang the American national anthem during the celebration of America’s 250th birthday. The matchup kicked off at 5:00 PM ET.

France made its first change early. Didier Deschamps replaced Bradley Barcola with PSG teammate Desire Doue. Doue, 21, had scored in the group stage finale against Norway, his second international goal.

Paraguay, playing a scoreless game in Philadelphia, made the first substitution of its own in the 58th minute, bringing on Jose Canale for defender Omar Alderete.

For long stretches, Paraguay looked built for survival. The South American team executed a game plan that started with “parking the bus” defensively while France struggled to break them down through the first half. France managed five shots in the first half, but none were on target.

Even so, France’s possession looked relentless. France has completed 319 passes to Paraguay’s 49 so far, and Paraguay has not managed a shot on target yet — the same goes for France.

As the second half began, Paraguay still controlled stretches of the attacking half, carrying sustained possession from early in the period. France tried to adjust with Mbappé and Michael Olise dropping deeper in search of openings.

Adrien Rabiot launched another long-range attempt at goal that was off the mark in the opening minutes of the second half. It was another sign of the problem France was wrestling with: creating clear chances against an ultra-defensive structure that kept resetting every attack.

The physical edge kept appearing, too. Kylian Mbappé was shoved by Paraguay’s Andres Cubas, and the France star immediately pushed back. The referee had to break up a brief scuffle.

Moments elsewhere underlined the narrow margin between control and danger. Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill got a hand on Manu Kone’s long shot from outside the penalty area that appeared headed for the top corner, keeping the score level.

At the other end, goalkeeper Mike Maignan released Mbappé into stride with a perfect long ball, but Mbappé couldn’t bring it under control cleanly on a breakaway and was forced to settle for a corner kick.

Beyond the match itself, the tournament’s larger picture was already in view. Both teams. according to the matchup context. are four wins away from winning the 2026 World Cup. with the trophy scheduled to be hoisted on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. New Jersey. The World Cup final is set for July 19 at MetLife Stadium.

In the lead-up to kickoff, weather became another storyline. Less than two hours before kickoff, the forecast reality was 98 degrees in Philadelphia, and both sides addressed the heatwave before playing. France manager Didier Deschamps acknowledged it was “not ideal.”

France will also be missing Aurelien Tchouameni. He won’t play Saturday’s last-16 clash with a thigh injury, and he was expected to be replaced by Manu Kone.

Tchouameni is not the only missing piece shaping how France sets its lineup. France has used a roster featuring Mike Maignan at goalkeeper; Jules Kounde. William Saliba. Dayot Upamecano. and Lucas Digne in defense; Manu Kone and Adrien Rabiot in midfield; and Ousmane Dembele. Michael Olise. Bradley Barcola. and Kylian Mbappé up front.

Paraguay’s lineup lists Orlando Gill as goalkeeper; Juan Jose Caceres, Gustavo Gomez, Omar Alderete, Junior Alonso, and Gustavo Velazquez in defense; Miguel Almiron, Andres Cubas, Matias Galarza, and Diego Gomez in midfield; and Julio Enciso in attack.

The broader tournament runs back to the group stage. France opened in Group E with a 3-0 win over Iraq on June 22 after posting other results earlier in the broader list of group play shown: Ivory Coast 1. Ecuador 0 on June 14; Brazil 3. Haiti 0 on June 19; and Ivory Coast 2. Curaçao 0 on June 25; plus Croatia 2. Ghana 1 on June 27.

Paraguay’s own path to the round of 16 has included the kind of grind-through results that can frustrate even elite teams — tripping up Germany to reach this stage. Still, France’s attack entered as a different level of threat.

France has already won the FIFA World Cup twice, in 1998 and 2018.

A familiar star-studded roster has fueled the momentum. Michael Olise plays club ball for Bayern Munich. Born in England, the 24-year-old joined Bayern in 2024 from Crystal Palace. Mbappé plays his club soccer for Real Madrid and finished his second full season with the team after a move from Paris Saint-Germain.

Paraguay, making its ninth World Cup appearance, has never won the tournament and its best-ever finish was the quarterfinals in 2010. The country was one of the 16 teams in the inaugural 1930 World Cup.

France’s tournament story has also been paced by individual production. Olise has six assists through four matches at this World Cup. the first major international tournament for the 24-year-old Bayern star. who made his national team debut in 2024. Mbappé, at 27, made his World Cup debut as a teenager in 2018, leading Les Bleus to their second championship.

On the sidelines of the patriotic night, Fox sent its in-studio show to Philadelphia, with NFL quarterback and Fox correspondent Jameis Winston standing in front of Independence Hall. Winston got fans to sing “Happy Birthday” to America while holding a birthday cake.

Before the game’s turning point, the match had already told a story of contrast: France dominating possession without decisive breakthroughs, and Paraguay defending with a ruthlessness that kept chances rare. Then VAR found the one opening France needed.

By the time Mbappé struck his penalty — his 19th career World Cup goal — the round of 16 stopped being about weather and ceremonies and became what World Cup knockout football always does: a single swing deciding who keeps walking toward the next stage.

  1. VAR waited forever and then gave it to Mbappé like come on. I didn’t even realize they were playing Paraguay too lol, just saw the heat and that’s it.

  2. So is the game gonna count if it was basically a sauna? Like that’s not a real condition for a World Cup match. Also VAR awarded penalty after advantage… so they basically admitted they missed it first, right?

  3. Mbappé always gets the big calls, that’s why he’s the star. France moving on to Morocco at “Gillette” stadium (isn’t it Gillette?) like football already has enough commercials, now it’s soccer too. Paraguay looked gassed already, heat or refs, not sure which.
