Framework secures cheaper SSDs, but CPU costs loom

Framework says it has secured cheaper PCIe Gen 5 SSDs from Adata, letting some Laptop 13 Pro preorder configurations move from 500GB to 1TB for less. But the company also expects CPU pricing to rise soon and plans to adjust Laptop 13 Pro system prices for new

A wait for a new computer just got a little lighter—and a lot more complicated.

If you’re sitting on a preorder for the Framework Laptop 13 Pro, Framework shared news meant to help your bill. The company says it secured cheaper new PCIe Gen 5 SSDs from its supplier, Adata. For customers who ordered a 500GB SSD configuration. that setup will now come with a 1TB SSD at a lower price.

Framework also says customers can now order configurations with the new 1TB or 2TB SSDs onboard. The catch is timing: the new options aren’t showing up in the DIY configurator yet.

Then comes the part that could sting for anyone hoping the price drop lasts. Framework says it has “gotten signals that CPU pricing will be increasing soon.” Because of that, it expects to “adjust the overall system price on Framework Laptop 13 Pro in the coming weeks for new orders.”

It’s a reminder of why these updates carry extra weight right now. Thanks to the component crisis, the timing is rough for anyone trying to buy a new machine at the moment. Major price increases have already spread across tech hardware, including some announced on Thursday for Apple devices and Xbox consoles.

Framework’s pricing swings also land against a backdrop of schedule changes. The company initially announced the Laptop 13 Pro in April and had planned to ship the first units in June. Those shipments were later delayed to July due to issues with the laptop’s haptic touchpad and its custom display.

So the story is moving in two directions at once: better value on storage for some preorders. paired with an approaching cost shift on the CPU side that could reshape pricing for new orders. For buyers in the middle—tracking delays. checking configurators. and watching each new component update—Framework’s latest announcement reads less like a clean win and more like the latest round in a hardware supply fight.
