Four NDP legislators won’t run for re-election

Edmonton-Goldbar’s Marlin Schmidt and Lori Sigurdson, who represents Edmonton-Riverview, will also serve their last term, said the party. “I want to thank Joe Ceci, Dr. Luanne Metz, Marlin Schmidt, and Lori Sigurdson for the tangible and immeasurable ways they have made Alberta better,” Nenshi said in a press release Saturday. “Before their time in elected office, each of them demonstrated a deep commitment to community service and improving the lives of others, and they carried that same dedication into public life.” Ceci was first elected
in 2015 and was finance minister in the NDP government led by Rachel Notley. Previous to that, he was a Calgary city councillor for 15 years. Metz first won her seat in 2023 and served as shadow minister for health. Social-worker Sigurdson was first elected in 2015, and, in the NDP government that lasted from then until 2019, was minister of innovation, advanced education, job skills training and labour. She also served as minister of seniors and housing.

So they’re just… retiring? Weird how that headline sounds like trouble but it’s probably fine.
Wait, who’s Nenshi? Isn’t that the guy who’s always talking about budgets? If they’re not running again, does that mean the NDP is basically done in Edmonton or what.
I saw “finance minister” and “innovation” in here and my brain went straight to the Alberta economy thing. Like, was it their fault prices went up? Or am I mixing it with another story… I dunno. Also shadow minister for health doesn’t sound like a real job to me.
Four legislators not running again… that’s a lot. I’m not even sure if this is good or bad for voters. Metz only got elected in 2023 right? So why bounce so quick? And if Joe Ceci was finance minister, shouldn’t he be staying to “fix” whatever happened, instead of thanking people in a press release. Seems like they’re leaving right before the hard questions.
