Four Classic HBO Shows Deserve Reboots Now

classic HBO – From Carnivàle’s unfinished epic to Bored to Death’s cancelled noir comedy, four HBO favorites are back on fans’ radars. The case is simple: these shows didn’t get their full run, and the timing now feels different.
The HBO show that ended before it should have can feel like an unfinished sentence. Fans keep going back to it anyway—watching, debating, petitioning in their heads—because the best parts are already there, waiting for a second chance.
That’s the mood behind a fresh ranked list of four classic HBO series that, to many viewers, deserve a reboot right now.
At the top of the list is ‘Carnivàle’, a dark fantasy drama that ran from 2003 to 2005. Set in the 1930s during the Dust Bowl. the story follows Ben Hawkins (Nick Stahl). a young man with strange powers whose mother’s tragic death leads him to join an enigmatic traveling carnival. The carnival is run by an unknown entity called the “Management. ” and the cast includes a diverse group of people with abilities not unlike the healing powers Ben possesses.
After Ben joins his newfound family. the show takes a more ominous turn: he begins to experience disturbing visions that send him on a quest for a man named Henry Scudder (John Savage). The series wasn’t appreciated enough for its lofty ambitions during its short run. despite its fantastic visuals. immersive tone. and dense themes. It may not have been the most accessible for general audiences. but it built a passionate cult following. including fans who took to internet forums to discuss theories. The argument for a reboot is simple: there’s already a built-in fan foundation. and the series has clear inspiration from ‘Twin Peaks. ’ which later received a successful revival season.
Number 3 is ‘Mr. Show With Bob And David’, which aired from 1995 to 1998. Comedians Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) and David Cross (Arrested Development) lead the sketch comedy. which toggles between the absurd and something even more absurd. The show includes a rotating cast of regular players and guests—Tom Kenny. Jack Black. Sarah Silverman. Jill Talley. and Paul F. Tompkins among them. Each episode is introduced in front of a live audience by fictionalized versions of Odenkirk and Cross. and then sketches unfold with metatextual. off-kilter. absurdist humor that folds into the next one.
Despite its brief three-season run, ‘Mr. Show’ has remained influential as a cult comedy. It also received a short, four-episode reboot in 2015. Still. the case being made now is for a longer return—especially since both Odenkirk and Cross are still very much working actors. The idea is that another decade could reveal how their sense of humor has evolved.
At No. 2 is ‘Enlightened’, which ran from 2011 to 2013. Amy Jellicoe (Laura Dern) is a successful corporate executive who’s gotten far in life despite self-destructive behavior. After a very public nervous breakdown. Amy leaves her job and her life to spend three months in rehab in Hawaii. There, she has a reawakening and learns how to live a more enlightened life. When she returns to live with her mother (Diane Ladd). she finds her new outlook isn’t welcomed by her family. friends. coworkers. or her drug addict ex-husband. Levi (Luke Wilson). With chaos piling up anyway, Amy struggles to maintain her zen.
The show comes from ‘The White Lotus’ creator Mike White. and it leans into his nuanced character-writing and distinct sense of humor. The list’s reasoning for a second run points to the contrast between critical reception and audience size: ‘Enlightened’ received great reviews. but viewers just weren’t there. and it was canceled as a result. Now that White and his writing are widely acclaimed, the reboot argument is that it would likely find better footing.
And then there’s ‘Bored to Death’ at No. 1, a series that ran from 2009 to 2011. Brooklyn-based writer Jonathan Ames (Jason Schwartzman) is in a rut he can’t get out of. Most of the time, he’s smoking weed while his girlfriend, Olivia Thirlby, threatens to break up with him. To change his situation. Jonathan posts an ad on Craigslist claiming he’s an unlicensed private detective—turning his fascination with crime novels into a part-time job.
But his personal life keeps unraveling. As Jonathan’s life disintegrates, it starts getting in the way of his clients’ needs, on top of dealing with a demanding editor, George (Ted Danson). Through it all, he finds some solace in his best friend, comic book artist Ray (Zach Galifianakis).
The series received favorable reviews. but the ratings took a nosedive between its second and third seasons. and HBO canceled it by the close of season 3. Fans responded the way dedicated fans often do—starting multiple petitions to keep the series on the air. though those efforts didn’t change the outcome. Even so. many viewers still believe ‘Bored to Death’ deserves a fourth season. and the case being made is that it’s a fun. quirky good time. powered by fantastic writing and the chemistry between Schwartzman and Galifianakis.
