He was 37. On Thursday, the University announced that former Alabama basketball guard Mikhail Torrance had passed away. His cause of death is unknown at this time.

Torrance played for the Crimson Tide for four seasons, from 2006 to 2010. Those years included a professional glow-up after college, but it was his final season at Alabama that still feels like the clearest snapshot of his impact.

In 2009–10, Torrance averaged 15.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.3 blocks. He earned a spot on the All-SEC Second Team. Before that final run of numbers, Torrance’s path included a painful detour that followed him beyond college. He wasn’t selected in the 2010 NBA Draft, and a heart condition played a role in teams passing on him. Later in that same year. he collapsed during a workout. and his brain was deprived of oxygen for over 10 minutes. according to The Birmingham News. It is not known if his heart played a role in his death.

After leaving Alabama, Torrance continued his career overseas and abroad. From 2011 to 2015, he played professional basketball in Turkey, Canada, Finland, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico.

His Alabama production can still be traced season by season. In 2006–07, he appeared in 21 games with no starts, averaging 11.7 minutes, 3.0 points, 1.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.3 steals, and 0.1 blocks. In 2007–08, he played 30 games with three starts for 12.2 minutes and 3.3 points, with 0.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists. At this point, the University says only that Torrance has died and that the cause is unknown. The unanswered question—whether his earlier heart condition had any connection—remains unresolved. This time, there is no second workout, no injury report to parse, no timeline to lean on. Just a loss confirmed. and a life reduced too quickly to the statistics he built and the health crisis that once interrupted his path.
