Emergency crews respond as smoke rises from Tata Steel

Emergency services are at the scene of a fire at the Tata Steel site in Port Talbot. Police and fire crews are at the scene while large plumes of smoke can be seen rising from the plant. Videos shared with WalesOnline show smoke bellowing from the site earlier this evening. A spokesperson for South Wales Police has urged residents in the surrounding areas to close their doors and windows. A spokesperson for the force said: “Emergency services are currently dealing with an incident at Tata
Steel, Port Talbot. Large plumes of smoke are visible in the area. “Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed. Please avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible. That smoke is insane. Hope everybody’s ok.
Close doors and windows?? Like we’re all just supposed to sit there while a steel plant burns. I don’t even know if that’s enough, I swear the air gets in anyway.
Is this the same Tata Steel that always has “safety issues” or is it a different site? Smoke plumes don’t just happen, someone probably cut corners. I mean, why wouldn’t they stop it sooner.
I saw a video and it looked like it was coming from the whole plant, not like a small thing. People always say “avoid the area” but where are you even supposed to go in Port Talbot? Also, does closing windows really help if it’s already in the air…
