FIFA clears Balogun for Belgium after sudden suspension reversal

FIFA lifts – Folarin Balogun’s one-match World Cup suspension was reversed by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee on Sunday, leaving the US Men’s National Team with its forward available for the Round of 16 against Belgium in Seattle.
By the time most teams are counting the minutes to kickoff, the lineup pressure usually turns to math: who is in, who is out, and what’s the backup plan.
For the U.S. Men’s National Team, that math changed abruptly on Sunday—the day before its Round of 16 match with Belgium in Seattle. FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee announced a reversal that meant forward Folarin Balogun would not be suspended.
Balogun had been sent off in the 64th minute of the Americans’ win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. after coming down on the foot of defender Tarik Muharemovic. The red card carried a one-match suspension for the next game, with no appeal process. But the disciplinary committee suspended the suspension itself.
“In line with article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year. ” a FIFA statement said. “If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period. the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement.”.
FIFA’s regulations also allow for that kind of decision: “the judicial body may decide to fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure.” When that happens, the player is placed in a probationary period in which the suspended sanction can be reimposed.
U.S. Soccer quickly welcomed the outcome. In a statement. it said. “We accept the decision of the Disciplinary Committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow.” The organization added: “Our full attention is focused on the Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle. and we look forward to the continued support of our amazing fans.”.
The decision landed late in the process. U.S. Soccer had been engaged with the disciplinary committee and learned of the ruling Sunday morning.
A similar approach had been used before. Cristiano Ronaldo was allowed to start the 2026 World Cup after a three-match ban tied to an elbow thrown in a 2025 match against Ireland was suspended.
FIFA did not provide answers when asked for additional details on the reasoning behind Balogun’s reversal.
The forward kept his reaction measured, even as the outcome left him unconvinced. After the game. he was seen shaking hands with Brazilian referee Raphael Claus. who administered the card following a video review. At a U.S. training session. Balogun described the decision as “unjust. ” and he said he wasn’t sure how a player could avoid contact in that kind of moment.
“I think as you all saw, if there’s nowhere else to put your leg, it’s going to be unavoidable,” he said. “I’ve seen many different opinions and takes,” he added. “But, for me personally, I think a yellow card would have been fair.”
Balogun’s availability is a major shift for the U.S. as it tries to keep its World Cup run going in a tournament hosted in the United States. The New York-born. London-raised forward scored a double in the opening match against Paraguay. and he had also scored against Bosnia before the red card was shown.
His goal against Bosnia was the third time he had the ball in the net in the tournament. The previous two had been ruled out for infractions, but the sequence still showed the kind of threat he creates through finishing and wide runs designed to open space and connect with other attackers.
The day before the Round of 16, the Americans’ biggest lineup uncertainty—who would replace Balogun—was answered. The more difficult question now is whether he can turn that narrow window of eligibility into momentum against Belgium.

So he’s basically not suspended anymore? FIFA be wild.
Wait I thought the red card meant automatic suspension like 100%. Now it’s “probationary”?? Seems like rules only matter sometimes.
Kinda confused… they said he got a red in the Bosnia game for hitting the guy’s foot, but then they reversed it the next day? Either FIFA messed up or the system is rigged. Either way U.S. should just play him and not overthink it.
Why would you suspend a suspension the day before a Round of 16 like that. That’s insane. Also “probationary period of one year” sounds like he can mess up again and they’ll just bring it back?? I just want consistency.
