FDOT Sends $100M to Fix Lithia Pinecrest Corridor

FDOT $100 – The Florida Department of Transportation has earmarked $100 million for Hillsborough County improvements to Lithia Pinecrest Rd. in Valrico, a long-stalled project championed by Commissioner Christine Miller amid worsening congestion and safety concerns.

Drivers on Lithia Pinecrest Rd.. in Valrico have long had to plan around it—two lanes carrying a steady stream of commuters between South Hillsborough County. including the Fish Hawk area. and the Tampa region.. For county officials. the bottleneck has been more than an annoyance; it has meant delays that can stretch for hours. especially when accidents or disabled vehicles block traffic during peak weekday mornings and evenings.

Now. after years of pushing for state funding. the Florida Department of Transportation has assigned $100 million to Hillsborough County for substantial improvements focused on safety and efficiency on the corridor.. The money will be allocated through the Local Agency Program over five years. giving the long-awaited Lithia Pinecrest project a pathway to move from advocacy to construction.

Commissioner Christine Miller. who has repeatedly called attention to the road’s congestion. said the new funding reflects a promise finally kept.. “For too long, East Hillsborough County has sat in traffic.. Working with the good folks at FDOT. I am pleased to announce we have finally taken a giant leap forward into fixing Lithia Pinecrest. ” Miller said.. “On my watch, the can will not be kicked down the road, the road will actually be fixed.”

The project’s urgency has been tied to how quickly the area has grown.. Hillsborough County estimated in 2023 that between 25,000 and 30,000 people travel the road each day, according to ABC Tampa Bay.. With that kind of daily demand funneled into a two-lane route. traffic routinely strains during commute windows—and can worsen rapidly after incidents force drivers into stop-and-go conditions.

FDOT did not provide specifics on exactly what will be built or how the corridor will change.. But in explaining the broader rationale behind its investments. the agency said infrastructure spending is central to its mission of supporting Florida’s economic competitiveness and quality of life.. In a statement. FDOT said it invests “at our ports. along our interstate highways. and across local arterial roadways that reduce congestion. expedite the flow of goods within the supply chain. and that increase safety.”

For Hillsborough County in particular, FDOT pointed to population growth. “Continued population growth means ‘these investments are critical to ensuring the highway network supports current and future needs across the region,’” the agency said.

FDOT also described how it decides where to deploy funds, saying it bases funding determinations on conversations with community leaders in order to maximize the impact of its investments. That includes projects on arterial roadways like Lithia Pinecrest that may not be state roads.

In its praise of Miller’s role. FDOT said the funding effort is meant to expedite congestion relief projects in western Hillsborough County. including the “long-awaited Lithia Pinecrest Project.” When completed. the agency said. “the corridor will be safer and more efficient to get families home for dinner.”

  1. 100 million sounds like a lot but knowing Florida they’ll still find a way to make it worse. Like is it gonna be 2 lanes the whole time or are they actually adding stuff? Either way I’m not holding my breath.

  2. Wait so FDOT sent the money to the county, but the county still has to do the work right? I saw something about a “Local Agency Program” and I just figured that means it’ll sit in a drawer for 5 years. Also, can they fix the accidents part or is it just repaving?

  3. Christine Miller “on my watch” 🙄 politics aside, I’ve been stuck on Lithia Pinecrest when there’s some disabled car and then everyone panics and doubles back. I don’t even care about the paperwork, I want traffic lights synchronized or at least turn lanes so people stop blocking each other. If they expand it, cool, but if it’s just safety stuff that won’t help when 25,000-30,000 people all funnel through two lanes. Probably another delay if they run outta materials.
