Fans call worst-ever ref as Ponga red-carded

Kalyn Ponga’s red card in Origin Game 1 for a shoulder charge to Tolu Koula has triggered furious backlash from commentators and fans online, with many pointing to footage they believe shows a head clash and questioning why the bunker wasn’t used to review fur

The moment Kalyn Ponga was shown the red card in Origin Game 1, the reaction was instant—and it didn’t fade when the replay cut through again.

Ponga was dismissed after official Ashley Klein deemed the incident a shoulder charge to the head of Manly wing Tolu Koula. Slow-motion replays were widely circulated showing what many viewers believed was contact between the two players’ heads. with Koula tackled from behind as the collision unfolded. A second reverse angle then led to the on-field decision being framed as a shoulder charge instead.

The bafflement deepened when viewers focused on Ponga’s left arm. arguing it didn’t attempt to wrap. while also appearing—depending on the angle—to make contact with Koula’s head. On commentary. one line captured the central frustration: “Well it’s a head clash. but you see the left arm how he tucks it and doesn’t try to wrap. they’ll rule this a shoulder charge. whether he goes to the bin or not.”.

Klein could be heard saying it was a “shoulder charge” with “direct contact to the head.” Another voice pushed back loudly from the broadcast: “No way is that send off, it’s a sin bin, if he goes in and wraps up there and still makes contact head on head how can you send him off?”

The bunker and its role became a focal point of the argument. One commentator said: “Over the last couple of years we have been disappointed with the impact of the bunker. there the bunker wanted to come in and give him 10 minutes.” On social media. that sentiment was echoed with even harsher language toward Klein. One ex-Panda. posting on X. wrote: “Well ‘they ref the Origin’ crowd are vindicated because they never send that off in club football.”.

Kieran L added: “He’s being dragged down and it’s a head clash and the ref overruled the guy with actual footage. this is an absolute rort.” Another user went further. writing: “Head clash. Klein is the worst ref going. Had to have an influence. Did not listen to the bunker.” A separate post called for consequences: “You need to fire Ashley Klein or never let him ref Origin again. because that is ridiculous. I support Manly and Queensland and that was not a send off.”.

While the debate raged online, the on-field disruption was immediate. Winger Koula left the field after the incident and failed his HIA. With Ponga off the field, NSW were able to activate Casey McLean as an 18th man in place of the Manly speedster.

The sending off didn’t come at a quiet time. Ponga had been one of the Maroons’ best as they raced out to a 20-6 lead, looking threatening from the opening minutes. With him removed, NSW responded quickly—five minutes later, Ethan Strange crossed to breathe life back into the match.

Ponga’s red card also carried its own historical weight. He became the first player since Joseph Aukuso-Suaalii in the 2024 series opener to be given their marching orders in the Origin arena.

Not everyone’s focus was on numbers and record books. Many viewers were locked on what they believed they saw in the footage. and whether the decision should have been reviewed differently—especially given that the on-field official determined it was a shoulder charge after seeing evidence from multiple angles.

The match, however, moved on—while the criticism kept rolling in.

  1. I didn’t even watch the whole thing but everyone’s saying it was a head clash?? The bunker should’ve been used, like why do they even have it if not.

  2. Ashley Klein is always so firm with the “shoulder charge” calls but the replay angles make it look like head to head. If the left arm tucks, okay, but the contact looks like it’s to the head for real. Also I swear they’re inconsistent like sometimes it’s straight red and sometimes it’s just a sin bin.

  3. Not gonna lie I think the bunker was a scam in this one. If they can review replays twice then why not just fix it immediately. I saw one clip where it looked like the arm wrapped and then another angle where it didn’t so now I’m confused like which one is the truth. Either way that red card felt way harsher than it should’ve been, should’ve been a send off?? idk man rugby league refs love making it a spectacle.
