When the morning traffic finally gave way to the stretch of State Route 62 near Cadiz Road. a family expected a graduation—something to celebrate. something to plan for. Instead. five people from a Fresno household. including 4-year-old twin girls. were pronounced dead after a violent crash that ignited both cars. the California Highway Patrol said.
Sergio Leon, 38; Herminia Hernandez, 39; and Antonio Leon, 36; along with twin girls Naomi and Nyah Leon were killed in the crash May 22 in San Bernardino County, officials said. The driver in the second vehicle was also killed: Holly Chafey, 60, according to the county coroner.
The CHP said the vehicle driven by Chafey lost control, veered off the road, then reentered the roadway. Investigators said it crossed the double-yellow line and collided with the car driven by the Fresno family. The impact caused both vehicles to catch fire.
A third vehicle was involved as well. The CHP said none of its four occupants was injured.
The crash happened at 8:20 a.m. on the eastbound side of State Route 62, near Cadiz Road, in the community of Freda. The Sheriff’s Department said there were 10 people involved in the crash; six were pronounced dead at the scene.
Freda sits deep in the Mojave Desert, about 40 miles west of the Arizona state line and east of Joshua Tree National Park.
Friends and family said the trip was meant to end in Arizona. Leon and his family were on their way to a graduation. A cousin told Houston-based Fox26 News, “We had family members starting to arrive. As they were arriving … Sergio, Antonio, Naya, Naomi, and Mini never showed up.”
In a fundraiser created by a relative of the Fresno family. Leon was remembered for a “hardworking spirit” and “generous heart. ” and Hernandez was described as warm and compassionate. The twins were portrayed as inseparable. with “bright smiles” and “playful energy.” The GoFundMe added. “The impact each of them made on their family. friends. and community will never be forgotten.”.
The timeline and location underscore how quickly a routine drive can turn into tragedy. The CHP’s account—loss of control. a reentry into the roadway. a crossing of the double-yellow line. and a head-on collision that set both cars on fire—left a clear moment of impact. and then an aftermath that families are still trying to understand.

That road has gotta be cursed or something. Double-yellow line and then boom, awful.
Wait so the Chafey car crossed the double yellow? I’m confused though because it says another vehicle was involved too but then “none injured”??
This is so heartbreaking. But I keep thinking like… why were they on SR-62 so early like 8:20am? Desert highways are basically death traps if you ask me.
Sounds like one of those crashes where everyone says “lost control” and it’s always the driver fault. But then CHP said Chafey reentered the roadway, crossed the line, hit the other car… so did the family’s car drift too or what? Also “10 people involved” makes no sense to me if only 4 occupants in one vehicle weren’t injured. Either way RIP, that’s brutal, especially the twins.
