Bears Fans React as Hammond Stadium Plan Drags On

In a new “Polling Place” segment on X, Bears fans reacted to the team’s announcement that it’s moving forward with a stadium project in Hammond, Indiana—ranging from outrage to reluctant acceptance. Most said they’ll stick with the Bears the same amount if the

When the Bears announced they’re moving forward with a stadium project in Hammond, Indiana, fans didn’t respond with a single unified roar. They came in hot—outraged, bummed, sometimes even oddly hopeful—but mostly skeptical enough to keep their emotional distance.

In the latest edition of “Polling Place,” the Sun-Times asked supporters on the social platform X to describe their reaction to the Hammond news and to weigh in on whether they’d back the team more, less, or the same if the Bears play home games across the state line.

“I’m outraged at our so-called leaders who drove away another taxpaying-job-creating business,” wrote @GaryBrussell24.

Not everyone carried that level of anger. @HSAddict697 said, “I’m bummed, but also happy for Hammond that something might help its economy.”

And the mood wasn’t uniform even when fans talked about support. When asked whether they’ll back the Bears more, less, or the same if they play in Hammond, @JerryFo69130849 offered a simple “More,” while the broader poll results pointed in a different direction.

Poll No. 1 asked: Which word best describes your reaction to the Bears’ announcing they’re moving forward with a stadium project in Hammond. Indiana?. The upshot from the segment was blunt: there wasn’t much excitement—though the piece suggested time could still change how people feel if the Bears actually go through with the plan.

Poll No. 2 came with a clearer signal. Will you support the Bears more, less or the same if they play home games across the state line?

The answers were:

a. More (3.8%)
b. Less (33.8%)
c. The same (62.5%)

The segment’s commentary noted there wasn’t an easy alternative for fans looking to switch allegiances—at least not if they were thinking about Green Bay.

Then came the question fans have been circling for a while: who’s really responsible for the protracted difficulty around a potential Bears stadium? Poll No. 3 asked who’s most responsible for how messy the Bears stadium saga has been.

The poll showed:

a. The Bears (51.8%)
b. City Hall (15.9%)
c. Springfield (32.3%)

In the comments, blame moved with the names people attached to it. Bears president/CEO Kevin Warren received @BuckKodiak’s vote. But @FPesche29037 placed blame on Gov. JB Pritzker, and several respondents wrote along the lines of “All of the above.”

One small detail didn’t change the overall feeling: even among fans ready to assign responsibility, the segment’s upshot framed it as a mess with many hands involved—so many, in fact, that the Bears’ own role still landed as the largest share of blame.

At the end of the day, the numbers and the reactions pointed to the same thing: the Hammond plan may be moving forward, but a lot of Bears fans are still measuring how much it deserves their buy-in—and how much of the fallout belongs to the people steering the process.

  1. I’m not even shocked they’re going with Hammond, Indiana. Feels like every team is “moving forward” with some plan forever. If it’s more tax money then I’m like… less. I don’t care what the poll says though.

  2. Happy for Hammond?? Like people won’t be mad when the traffic gets worse. Also how does this even help the Bears? I thought they already had a stadium, unless this is like practice field stuff. Poll says less like 33% but maybe that’s bots.

  3. More, less, same… it’s all just percentages. If they make Hammond the home games across the state line then watch, I’ll probably still go if they’re winning. But I hate that “leaders drove away jobs” line like… which business?? they mean the Bears should’ve picked another option? Sounds messy.
