MLB trade deadline rumors: biggest questions ahead
Bob Nightengale breaks down the biggest trade deadline questions as contenders and sellers weigh their next moves.
The first all-women professional baseball league since 1954 opens Saturday, and it will stream nationally on ESPN.
ESPN has reached a rights agreement with the Women’s Pro Baseball League, making ESPN the exclusive national streaming home of the league’s 2026 season in the United States and U.S. territories.
ESPN will stream 37 games, including all 30 regular-season games and seven guaranteed playoff games. There will also be 11 games simulcast on the Scripps Sports Network. ESPN will carry the postseason exclusively, including the best-of-five Championship Series. The WPBL will handle all the production.
The last league like the WPBL was the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, the circuit behind the movie “A League of Their Own,” which dissolved in 1954. Justine Siegal co-founded the WPBL in 2024, nine years after she became the first woman to coach for a major league team when she worked for the Athletics.
Four teams will play the first season: the New York Heights, Boston Hunters, Los Angeles Queens and San Francisco Firebells, each named for a woman who pushed women’s rights forward. All of them will play at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois, a 5,200-seat neutral site. According to the league, Springfield hosted one of the earliest paid women’s games back in 1875.
Los Angeles and New York play in the opener on Saturday, Aug. 1, at 6 p.m. ET. Mo’ne Davis, who became famous at 13 for pitching a shutout in the Little League World Series, is on the Queens along with Japanese pitcher Ayami Sato. Kelsie Whitmore, the No. 1 pick in the league’s draft, went to San Francisco.
