Christian Eriksen’s last movement looked like a warning—he grabbed his chest while playing defense, then fell to the ground during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine on Sunday, June 7.
Players from both teams rushed in. The training staff was called immediately as the broadcast cameras quickly cut away from the scene. After roughly 10 minutes, Eriksen was able to get up and walk to the ambulance under his own power.
Danish national team doctor Morten Boesen later said in a statement that Eriksen was “conscious and doing well under the circumstances,” adding that “the match has been called off.”
The incident hit hard because it echoes a previous moment on the same stage of professional football. In 2021. Eriksen collapsed and went into cardiac arrest after receiving a throw-in during the final minutes of the first half of Denmark’s Euro match against Finland. His life was saved after teammate Simon Kjær rushed to put him on his side and make sure his airway was open before paramedics revived him with a defibrillator.
Boesen described the speed of that recovery the next day. “He was gone,” he said, explaining that the resuscitation began and that they “managed to do it.” How close they were to losing him, he said then, was unclear—“but we got him back after one (shock), so that’s quite fast.”
After that 2021 cardiac arrest, a pacemaker was implanted in Eriksen’s heart in the following days. The device was likely activated when he collapsed again on Sunday, Boesen said. In the statement released after the Denmark-Ukraine game. he added that Eriksen was “briefly unconscious” but “regained consciousness very quickly. ” and that the team was “quickly in contact with him.”.
Boesen said Eriksen will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident.
The team’s decision to cancel the match came after a day that started with football’s bright global rhythm—headlines. schedules. and venues—only for Sunday’s evening to turn into a test of medical response. teamwork. and nerves. By the time Eriksen was walking toward the ambulance under his own power. the immediate emergency had at least shifted from crisis to treatment. with doctors now focused on what happened this time and why.

so the match got canceled because he had a pacemaker?? like that’s supposed to prevent this…
I just saw the clip where he grabs his chest and then the cameras cut away… that’s so scary. They say he was conscious but “briefly unconscious” is still like… what the heck happened.
Pacemaker probably didn’t work this time or got turned on too late, right? Also the throw-in thing in 2021 like… maybe he’s allergic to the turf or something. I’m not saying that’s it but it feels weird it keeps happening on that field.
Match canceled… but why do they let these friendlies go on at all if they’re basically doing health emergencies? He walked to the ambulance himself so that’s good, but the whole “under the circumstances” line just makes me nervous. Hope they figure out what caused it again, because it already happened once and they implanted the thing already.
