England second Test ratings: Seamers shine once again in big Lord’s victory… but for which player is the jury still out?

England completed a crushing 194-run victory over Pakistan at Lord’s on Sunday and took the three-match series with one game to spare.

Here, Lawrence Booth runs the rule over their display… 

Ben Duckett: 3/10

Trapped lbw once more by Mohammad Abbas, then chipped tamely to mid-off. His average, just under 39, is at its lowest for three and a half years.

Emilio Gay: 5/10 

Strangled down leg in the first innings, he battled hard in tough conditions on the second evening, only to be undone by a grubber once play restarted on the third afternoon. The jury remains out.

Jordan Cox: 7.5/10 

Looked the classiest player on either side while making a patient half-century on the first day, confirming the view that he must keep his place when Jacob Bethell returns. An asset at third slip.

Joe Root: 4/10

Has grown in stature off the field over the past fortnight, but can’t avoid falling lbw, whether or not the wicketkeeper is up to the stumps. Has now been dismissed that way in nine of his last 12 Test innings, with no solution in sight.

Harry Brook: 6/10  

Did his best to overcome the conditions, and fought especially hard on the third afternoon, but – like Root – he still looks shackled when the wicketkeeper comes up to the stumps.

Dan Lawrence: 7/10 

Did his long-term prospects no harm with an intelligent half-century between the showers on the third day. His run-out on the first day was less smart.

Jamie Smith: 7.5/10

Helped dig England out of a hole on the first day, kept well – both up to the stumps and back – and lost his wicket trying to force his pace on the third. Quietened the debate about his future.

Gus Atkinson: 6/10 

Deserved better than to go wicketless, but there’s no doubt he poses less of a regular threat now that he has been elbowed away from the new ball. Batted well for 45 to give England a match-winning buffer.

Ollie Robinson: 9/10 

Unplayable at times, nipping the ball both ways at going at less than one and a half an over. Of his type, and on his day, he is among the best in the world.

Jofra Archer: 8/10 

Bowled as fast as he did in his 2019 pomp, and in another game might have doubled his match haul of five wickets. Brutally bounced out Babar Azam in the second innings.

Josh Tongue: 7.5/10 

Worked over Babar brilliantly in the first innings, and was used as the battering ram to bounce out Shakeel in the second. Also made 42 runs for once out from No 11.
