England arrived in the Kansas City area with schedules already mapped and training gear already packed. Then, before the first session, the missing started.

Boots belonging to some of the team’s biggest stars were stolen from a van en route from West Palm Beach in Florida to England’s Swope Soccer Village base in Missouri. where they will call home for the next three weeks at least. The theft struck while the load was traveling between the pre-camp location and the official World Cup training base.

The damage goes beyond the symbolic loss of a pair of boots. England’s match footwear was taken along with official tournament balls and key training equipment. Staff are now scrambling to work out what has been taken and what is actually available before they train there for the first time on Saturday afternoon.

Only one football was reportedly left among the cargo that remained. Fears have also grown that boots belonging to players including Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham may have gone as well.

England’s staff had moved essential training items from Florida as part of meticulous planning. including analysis equipment. Thomas Tuchel’s whiteboards. and massage tables. With so many elements wrapped up in the next steps of their preparation. the theft has become a race against time to recover or replace items central to delivering a first World Cup on foreign soil.

The timing is especially painful. Wednesday’s World Cup opener against Croatia is looming, and England are already preparing for the first match of their tournament journey while working through gaps created by the theft.

Security staff suspect that drivers they trusted to deliver the kit could be involved. The FA is now liaising with local police as efforts continue to recover the stolen goods. The FA did not comment when approached.

For now, England’s first training session at Swope Soccer Village is less about sharpening sharpness and more about counting what’s left—and trying to bring back what’s missing before the Croatia opener begins.
