Replacing a roof solely to improve energy efficiency usually isn’t worth the upfront cost. “If the roof still has life left in it, insulation wins and it is not close,” Oveisy says.

But if it’s time for a new roof anyway, upgrading to solar-reflective, or “cool roof,” shingles can offer more energy-saving benefits. “The extra cost of stepping up to solar-reflective shingles is modest, so replacement time is the right moment to buy that upgrade,” Oveisy says.

These products are designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than traditional shingles.  According to the EPA, cool shingles can help you reduce cooling demand during peak hours by 11% to 27%. They’re especially effective in hotter climates, where demand for AC is highest.

Shingles with a high Solar Reflective Index might also offer durability benefits. “Solar reflective shingles lower a roof’s surface temperature and can help reduce UV degradation, which can extend the shingles’ own lifespan and reduce maintenance costs over time,” says Lucas Hamilton, manager of applied building science at CertainTeed/Saint-Gobain North America.

New siding systems

Like roofing, replacing the siding on your home usually requires a larger upfront cost compared to the long-term energy savings. That said, if it’s time for a siding replacement, upgraded products can offer improved efficiency. “Modern siding materials, such as CERTAplank, are designed to provide better thermal resistance, which helps keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer,” Hamilton says. 

Window replacements

The next time you need to replace your windows, consider an energy efficient option. Replacing single-pane windows with an ENERGY STAR certified option can reduce your energy bills by up to 13%. If you’re not ready to fully replace your windows, adding caulking or weatherstripping to existing windows can help reduce drafts and improve efficiency without the high upfront cost.
