Ed Sheeran didn’t wait for a spotlight moment to deliver the news—he put it in a very personal place.

On Friday, the “Azizam” singer shared a private update with fans through his Teddy’s Mailer mailing list. In the email, he wrote that he had made the decision to leave his record label Asylum and Warner Music Group a full month earlier.

“A little update from me, I left my record label a month ago…”

For many listeners, the timing wasn’t totally out of character. Sheeran has been saying since his Subtract album that he wants to dial back his career so he can spend more time with his wife Cherry and their two daughters, Lyra and Jupiter.

In the same message, he explained that the change has been in his head for a while. “I decided to leave Asylum/Warner last month. I leave the company with SO much love and gratitude for everything we have achieved together. ” he wrote. adding that his life looks very different now than it did when he was a teenager.

He also described what feels true to him underneath the bigger pop career. “And I’ve been feeling in my gut for a long time that a lot of things in my professional life need to change. ” Sheeran continued. “I am, underneath it all, a singer songwriter who plays pub gigs. And I’ve sorta morphed into this pop star who plays stadiums over 15 years. it’s a super amazing thing to have happened but also a lot to get your head around.”.

When fans expected drama, he moved in the opposite direction. Sheeran said this wasn’t a fight. “This isn’t a ‘disgruntled artist leaves record label’ type situation,” he wrote. “This is a boy who started as a teenager on the company with different priorities. to the father of 2 man who exists now. who feels like he needs a shift and change in the way he does things professionally.”.

He closed the email with a forward-looking note. “Excited to see where the next 15 years takes me. Loads of love to everyone x”

For Warner Music Group and Asylum, the response came in the form of statements. WMG, as well as Asylum’s leader Ed Howard, released statements sending love to Ed and his future.

Behind the formal language, the human point was clear in the way Sheeran chose to deliver the message: one month after making the decision, he wanted his fans to hear it directly—framed not as a breakup, but as a personal reset and a new rhythm for the years ahead.
