Dustin Poirier’s Father’s Day didn’t unfold the way he likely planned. Instead of the usual post-tribute glow, the UFC legend spent part of Sunday evening in custody after being arrested on a public drunkenness charge in Georgia.

He was booked at 6:38pm and released shortly after 10pm, according to the timeline that has emerged since the arrest. The circumstances leading up to the incident remain unclear, and Poirier is said to have made his initial court appearance on Monday morning.

In Georgia, public drunkenness is a misdemeanor offense that can carry up to one year in jail and/or a $1000 fine if a conviction follows. The legal risk, even before anyone is found guilty, immediately turns a personal day into something heavier.

The timing has added another layer of discomfort for fans. It was the same day Poirier reposted a Father’s Day tribute shared by his wife on Instagram—an image showing him smiling alongside his two children. Not long after news of the arrest broke online. Poirier returned to social media and wrote on Instagram: “Love you all. I’m working on myself. ” a message that reads less like a statement and more like a note to the people who have followed his career for years.

Poirier, 37, is regarded as one of the UFC’s greatest fighters of his generation at 155lbs. He’s been an Interim Lightweight champion and is widely known for defeating Conor McGregor twice in three bouts. and for wins over Michael Chandler. Max Holloway. Eddie Alvarez. and Justin Gaethje. among others.

He retired last year following his final fight at UFC 318. And only weeks before this arrest, during a conversation tied to UFC Freedom 250 hosted at the White House, Poirier described how retirement has felt week to week rather than as a clean transition.

“Thanks for asking. I’m trying to navigate it bro. I’m good. Some days I’m great, some days I’m not so good. It’s up and down honestly,” he told Full Send MMA.

He added, “If I’m not working towards something or trying to better my family, I’m a danger to myself”.

Now those words, spoken just weeks earlier about trying to stay on track, sit alongside an arrest that has put him back in the spotlight under a charge that can’t be brushed off as anything but serious.

Poirier’s representative was contacted for comment.

  1. This is wild. Like I don’t even know what public drunkenness is supposed to mean, did he just stumble outside somewhere? Hope he gets it together, especially since he was posting with his kids.

  2. I saw something about it earlier and it said Georgia like that’s basically the same as any other state… so why is it a big deal? Also “released shortly after 10pm” like he was just holding him for a vibe check or what. Sucks though.

  3. Man the timing with the Instagram post is heartbreaking and also kinda confusing. Like if he was already fighting retirement stress then idk what happened Sunday. Public drunkenness sounds like a minor thing but they say up to a year?? That seems either way too harsh or I’m missing something. Either way not a good look for him.
