Duolingo resurrects dead streaks for June 1–30

Duolingo frames the problem in personal terms because users have treated it that way. The company says that in the past year alone. tens of thousands of learners asked for their streak back across social media in more than 80 countries. And the company points to the everyday reasons people fall off: skipping French for their wedding. for an international vacation. or while in labor.
Duolingo already offers “streak freezes,” which let users pause lessons for a short period. What’s different here is that, for the first time, the company is allowing a permanently lost streak to be restored. The campaign lands as Duolingo pushes harder for user growth in 2026.
When Duolingo announced its Q4 2025 results. CEO Luis von Ahn told investors the company’s goal is to reach 100 million daily active users in the medium-term—doubling its existing monthly active users. To do that. Duolingo is focusing on giving subscribers of some lower-cost subscription plans access to AI tools that would otherwise be limited to higher-cost. premium paid plans.
The market’s mood has been less forgiving. Duolingo’s share prices are currently down 77% year over year. a decline Duolingo says was kick-started by its infamous “AI-first” memo in April 2025. Still. the company is moving forward with its growth push—and this streak-revival window is one of the most direct incentives it can offer learners.
The rules are straightforward, and the timeline is short—exactly the kind of combination that makes it easy to miss. Anyone who has completed a streak of 30 days or more in the past will automatically be eligible for streak restoration. and those eligible should receive an email. push notification. or in-app ping.
To start, users need to locate the “restore streak” option inside the app. Duolingo says it’s available in multiple places: on the home screen when you first open the app, through the profile banner, in the streak drawer, or via the floating action button on the left-hand side of the screen.
Then comes the part that decides whether the streak truly comes back. Users must complete three lessons back-to-back in order to successfully recover the streak.
After that, it’s over—streak restored, glory recovered, and the friends you’ve been explaining yourself to might finally get a more cheerful update.
