Doug McCain Dies Suddenly at 66, Family Mourns

Doug McCain, the eldest son of the late U.S. senator John McCain, has died “suddenly” at 66. His sister Meghan McCain confirmed the news on Instagram, while the McCain Institute also released condolences as the family grieves and waits for further details.

Doug McCain, the eldest son of the late John McCain, died “suddenly” at 66 years old. The news first surfaced Wednesday after HD Oliver Funeral Apartments shared an obituary for the Navy pilot. saying he “died suddenly” that day. The obituary did not include additional details about the circumstances of his death.
On Saturday, Doug’s younger sister Meghan McCain, 41, confirmed the passing with a grief-filled post on Instagram. She wrote: “I am deeply saddened to share the news of my brother Doug McCain’s sudden passing. He was a truly wonderful, joyful man who supported me throughout my life. He brought humor, fun and great conversation to every room. I will cherish our memories together.”.
Meghan did not include in her caption the words “Our prayers are with his wife Ashley and children Caroline and Shepp.”
Doug’s death also drew public condolences from the McCain Institute on X (Twitter). The institute said: “We extend our condolences to the McCain family following the passing of Douglas ‘Doug’ Shepp McCain. the eldest son of John McCain. A Navy pilot like his father. Doug will be remembered as a patriot and friend to the many alumni of Sen. McCain’s Institute, campaigns & Senate staff.” The post was dated May 23, 2026.
Doug was born in 1959. He was the son of John McCain’s first wife, Carol Shepp. John later legally adopted Doug and his brother Andrew in 1965 after marrying Carol. The couple then welcomed a daughter, Sidney, in 1966. John and Carol divorced in 1980—the same year John married Cindy McCain. Together, John and Cindy went on to have Meghan, John “Jack” McCain, James, and Bridget.
In the 2017 documentary John McCain: For Whom The Bell Tolls, Doug spoke about his relationships with his siblings. He said: “I have a good relationship with Cindy, as do my brother and sister. And I have a good relationship with Meghan, Jack, Jimmy and Bridget. We’re not extraordinarily close, but if I ever need something, I know how to reach them.”.
Doug’s death comes eight years after John died following a battle with brain cancer. As of now, there are still no details available regarding Doug’s cause or the manner of death.
