Dolly Parton arrived in Cornersville, Tennessee on Wednesday, June 24, stepping out in a pink-and-blue fringe outfit with a “Dolly” name tag and her signature stilettos for the grand opening of her newest roadside business.
The country icon helped officially open “Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stop,” located off Interstate 65. It was her first appearance since she canceled a six-show Las Vegas residency earlier over ongoing health issues.
Before cutting the ribbon over the entrance. Parton welcomed travelers with a short speech that landed directly on the heart of the place she envisioned. “Well, the doors are open and I could not be prouder,” she told the crowd. “Whether you are hauling loads. hauling the family. or just passing through. we built this place for you.” She closed with a simple message: “Welcome home.”.
Parton didn’t keep things strictly sentimental. She said the stop was designed to give people “good food. real rest. a little music and people who are genuinely glad you stopped in. ” then leaned into a bit of playful rivalry. “I’m sure some of you want to know why I wanted a truck stop,” she joked. “Well, I couldn’t leave it to beavers,” a nod to Buc-ee’s and its bucktoothed beaver mascot.
She also suggested she wasn’t looking at anyone else as competition. “We don’t think we’ll have to. We’re going to have everything you want or need. So, thank you so much for coming.”
The idea, she explained, grew out of decades spent touring America by tour bus—and the desire to create a stop where travelers feel genuinely welcomed and appreciated.
Inside, “Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stop” is built like a full roadside destination. The travel center includes fuel pumps, a convenience store, a restaurant, a coffee shop serving Parton’s Cup of Ambition blend, a merchandise store, a lounge, EV chargers, and even a dog park.
There’s also a chance for visitors to snap photos with a tour bus on display and to check out a mural by Southern artist Britt Flood, which pays tribute to Parton’s roots. An event space hosts live music—fitting for a performer who spent her career built around the stage.
The day took on extra emotional weight because of what’s come before. Parton’s appearance comes amid ongoing health concerns that have followed her in recent months. Last September, she postponed shows, citing health challenges. Then, in May, she canceled the residency outright.
In an Instagram video posted around that announcement, Parton said what had been going on behind the scenes. “My immune system and my digestive system got all out of whack over the past couple three years and they’re working real hard on rebuilding and strengthening those and hopefully I’ll be up to snuff again soon. ” she said.
At the time, she added that she was responding well to her medications but needed more time before she would be ready for stage performances again.
On Wednesday, though, fans couldn’t help but notice the contrast between the celebration and the concern. Her appearance at the truck stop left many worried: she appeared frail and seemed to need help getting around. turning the ribbon-cutting moment into something far more complicated than a grand opening.
