Dog’s shotgun trigger injures woman in Scottsbluff, police say

A small dog in a truck set off a loaded shotgun outside a convenience store in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, sending a pellet into a woman as she waited at a traffic light near the scene, police said.

The Scottsbluff Police Department said officers were notified of the shooting shortly after 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 23. The city, home to about 15,000 people near the Wyoming border, was initially told a BB gun may have been used. But as officers traveled to the area, the reports changed to a shotgun.

When police arrived, they found a truck with damage described as consistent with a shotgun blast to the passenger side door panel. The vehicle also had an attached camper.

Police said the chain of events began when the truck owner pulled into the convenience store to make purchases. while the passenger stood near the front passenger side door. Investigators said a dog inside the back seat moved from one side of the vehicle to the other. That movement, police said, triggered a loaded shotgun that had a live shell in the chamber.

The woman who was hurt was at a traffic signal nearby, with her arm resting out of the window, police said. She was struck in her upper right arm. Police said her injury was not life threatening, and a family member took her to a local hospital for treatment.

The department said the incident remains under investigation.

Nebraska law makes it illegal to travel with a loaded shotgun in a vehicle, according to state statutes. The police department said the episode should serve as a reminder about firearm safety when handling, possessing, transporting, or maintaining any firearm.
