The Dodgers get key updates when it comes to the injuries by relief pitcher Edwin Díaz and catcher Dalton Rushing.
As the playoffs draw near for the Los Angeles Dodgers, with the team waiting on the pitching return of Shohei Ohtani, other players on the team look to come back and play to their high standards. With Dodgers closer Edwin Díaz still out, along with catcher Dalton Rushing, the two get key injury updates.
Starting with Díaz, who has been dealing with inflammation on the right side of his neck, he is “working through a bullpen progression,” and the next step will be a rehab assignment before coming back to the team, via MLB.com.
As an expected return is mid-September, the same month could also see Rushing come back, who has “started a throwing progression,: though his “ability to catch again this season is still in question.”
If you ask Rushing himself, not only does he feel he is “progressing well,” but he plans to be catching in September, looking to help his team.
“I’m progressing well. I feel good,” Rushing said, according to DodgersBeat.com. “We are starting [a] throwing progression very soon. So, the plan is for me to be on the field in September.”
Dodgers’ Edwin Diaz likely not in same role upon return
So far this season, Rushing has recorded a .253 batting average with 12 home runs and 36 RBIs in 74 games, whereas Díaz’s season has been frustrating, to say the least. Recording a 11.85 ERA with 19 strikeouts and seven saves in 16 games, it’s likely that he won’t be the closer when returning from his second stint on the injured list, as Díaz understands he hasn’t “done my job.”
“I’m good with the decision because I know I haven’t done my job,” Díaz said, via MLB.com. “If I’d done my job, I’d be pitching in the ninth inning. But I’m super happy because Tanner Scott is doing his job and doing it really well.”
“It’s a little bit frustrating because I know the pitcher I am,” Díaz said. “I know when I’m good, I can do really good things. I’m working to come back in that form.”
It remains to be seen how Díaz and Rushing progress for the Dodgers.
