Kasper Schmeichel’s gloves will not be worn again.
At 39. the Premier League title-winner has confirmed he is ending his active professional career after failing to overcome a shoulder problem that has followed him for more than a year. His retirement takes shape around the end of his Celtic contract in June. after doctors told him he should not expect to return to top-level football.
The injury traces back to March 2025. when Schmeichel was on duty for Denmark during their Nations League quarter-final second-leg defeat by Portugal in Lisbon. That tie went into extra-time, and he continued to play even after Denmark had used all their substitutes. What started as a persistent issue then deepened further in February.
In goal for Celtic, Schmeichel played in the 4-1 first-leg defeat in the Europa League play-off against Stuttgart on February 19. He then stepped into his final match for the club three days later, in a 2-1 Scottish Premiership defeat by Hibernian.
On Wednesday, Schmeichel said the decision was effectively made for him by medical advice. When his Celtic contract expires in June, he will stop his active football career, he told TV 2 Sport in Parken.
He said: “When my contract with Celtic expires in June, I will stop my active football career. It is a decision that has been made for me.”
Schmeichel added that he has consulted with various surgeons and experts about his shoulder, but their message was unambiguous. “I have consulted with various surgeons and experts in relation to my shoulder. and they have told me that I should not expect to come back and play top-level football. I have thought a lot, but I believe that now is the right time.”.
His retirement closes a decorated chapter that began with Manchester City, where he started his club career. His longest run came at Leicester City, where he featured in 479 games and won the Premier League title in 2015-16, as well as the FA Cup in 2021.
After Leicester, he had spells with Nice and Anderlecht before joining Celtic. This season, Schmeichel made 39 appearances for the Scottish club across all competitions. He also won two Scottish Premiership titles at Celtic and a League Cup.
On the international stage, Schmeichel earned 120 caps for Denmark and took part in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. He also helped Denmark reach the semi-finals of Euro 2020.
Away from the trophies, the story is about timing and what cannot be forced. Schmeichel said he had hoped for a proper farewell on the pitch, even if it did not come together the way he wanted.
He continued: “I think everyone dreams of saying goodbye on the pitch, but you don’t always get what you want. I’ve got so much else along the way, so football doesn’t owe me anything. I have been given so many opportunities and things in my career. So many experiences.”
He finished with a quiet admission about the ending: “I would have really liked to have just one game, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be.”
The timeline of the shoulder problem—beginning during Denmark’s extra-time defeat in Lisbon. worsening through Celtic’s Europa League play-off against Stuttgart. and ending with his last appearance for the club in early March—leaves little room for an escape hatch. Now. as doctors’ advice becomes final. Schmeichel’s career stops not with a farewell match. but with a decision delivered by the body that no longer responds.

Damn 39? I thought he’d go way longer.
So it was his shoulder since Portugal game in March 2025? Honestly goalie injuries are brutal. Sad he couldn’t just rehab it and come back.
Wait I’m confused, they said “Kasper Schmeichel gloves will not be worn again” but goalkeepers always have gloves? So they just mean he’s retiring right? Like the article makes it sound like his hands are done lol.
I feel bad but also… coaches shoulda listened earlier? If it flared in that Portugal match and it got worse by February, that’s like a whole year of dragging it out. And Celtic contract ending in June like timing matters, sure. I saw another clip where he looked fine though, so I don’t get how it’s “unambiguous” now unless they rushed the meds or something.
