Dizzy Gillespie fires back at Pietersen franchise claims

Jason Gillespie mocks Kevin Pietersen’s claim that he sacrificed his England career for the future of franchise cricket, saying it was really about cash and delivering a sharp, sarcastic swipe on a podcast.

Jason Gillespie didn’t just disagree with Kevin Pietersen — he mocked the idea that Pietersen’s fight with the England and Wales Cricket Board paved the way for modern stars to enjoy franchise cricket.

Pietersen had made his case during an interview with Ranveer Allahbadia. describing a long-running battle with the ECB over participation in the Indian Premier League. He argued his willingness to challenge the establishment came at enormous personal cost, saying: “I made big sacrifices. I lost my career. That’s the reason why everybody in that establishment went against me.”.

Pietersen also claimed his England career ended too soon. He said: “I was 33 when my England career finished, 104 Test matches. I should have played 150-160 Tests and got 12,000-13,000 runs. That’s what I should have got.”

In his retelling, Pietersen framed the modern benefit as direct repayment for what he gave up. He said he had spoken to Jos Buttler “a few days ago,” and Buttler told him “thank you,” adding: “Because of all the sacrifices I had made, these guys can have the fruits now.”

Gillespie’s response came on the Fast Bowling Cartel podcast, where he mocked Pietersen’s presentation of himself as a selfless pioneer. He said: “I also read about KP, he also claimed that he paved the way for players to play franchise cricket at the expense of his own career.”

Then Gillespie turned the argument back into a charge. He referenced Pietersen’s figures and said: “He would have played 150 Tests [for England] he reckons, or more.”

After that, Gillespie switched fully into sarcasm, portraying Pietersen as a role model for sacrifice: “What a selfless individual, Kevin Pietersen is.”

The jab sharpened when Gillespie delivered a long, mock-gratitude line that ended with a direct verdict. He said: “I want to take this opportunity please. I want to say thank you to Kev, for the stars above, the sun, the moon and the earth we walk on, and the air we breathe. Thank you Kevin.”

Gillespie then abandoned the performance and went straight for motives, saying: “Give me a spell. It was all about cash for you Kev, it’s all it was.”

He finished with a final punchline: “Give me a break ya muppet.”

The exchange has landed on top of one of cricket’s most enduring rivalries. Pietersen spent much of his career tormenting Australia on the field while also becoming one of the most polarising figures in world cricket.

Some of his defining moments are etched into Ashes history. His “unforgettable 158 at The Oval” helped England reclaim the Ashes in 2005, while his double-century in Adelaide during the 2010-11 series played a major role in England’s historic Ashes triumph on Australian soil.

Pietersen’s reputation followed him off the field too. Australian crowds regularly booed him, and he embraced the role of cricket’s pantomime villain, often finding himself at the centre of controversy throughout his international career.

Despite all of that, Pietersen’s standing remains enormous on the statistical record. He scored 8,181 Test runs at an average of 47.28, including 23 centuries.

The friction with the ECB escalated dramatically in the latter stages of his career. Pietersen was dropped following England’s disastrous 2013-14 Ashes tour of Australia. and he has long maintained he was unfairly treated by administrators — insisting he paid a heavy price for challenging the cricket establishment.

As Gillespie’s remarks show, Pietersen’s claim about who paid the price for franchise cricket still has no consensus inside the game.
