Lake Cowichan warns arsons risk public safety

The Town of Lake Cowichan warned about a series of arsons at municipal facilities, with the Lake Cowichan Fire Department having to respond to three on May 28 alone. In a post on the town’s Facebook page, they said they wanted to bring awareness to the incidents that have targeted infrastructure, including public washrooms, calling them “deliberate, senseless, and disturbing.” “These incidents are also extremely serious and pose significant risks to public safety,” the post said. “Deliberately setting fires within municipal facilities not only places

the individuals committing these acts in danger but also creates the potential for serious harm to other members of the public, emergency responders, and municipal staff. In addition, these actions result in costly damage to public infrastructure and community assets that are funded and shared by all residents.” Not only does the public have to pay for it, the fires at the facilities may result in temporary closures of the public amenities as repairs are made. “The town strongly urges anyone involved in these activities

to stop immediately. These matters are being treated with the utmost seriousness and have been reported to the RCMP for investigation,” the post said. Criminal charges may result for those responsible. The town asked for anyone who has witnessed suspicious activity, or who has information related to these incidents to contact Lake Cowichan RCMP at 250-749-6668. The detachment is located at 70 Stanley Rd., Lake Cowichan. “Community safety is a shared responsibility. The town appreciates the continued support and vigilance of residents in helping protect

public spaces and ensuring municipal facilities remain safe, accessible, and welcoming for everyone.”

  1. Those public washrooms are always gross anyway, so I’m guessing someone tried to be “funny” or whatever. But if it’s getting people hurt, that’s messed up. Hope they find whoever did it.

  2. Three arsons in one day?? That sounds like it has to be the same person or group, right? Also I don’t get why they waited to post about it, like if it’s dangerous shouldn’t they shut down everything immediately? And RCMP will actually do something or it’ll just disappear.

  3. I saw this on Facebook and it said “deliberate, senseless” but honestly sounds like someone drunk with a lighter to me. Not saying that’s okay, just like… municipal facilities are kinda easy targets. If they close the washrooms again people will complain, then the town pays, classic. Hope they catch em but knowing Canada bureaucracy it might take forever.
