By the time the nightcap ended, the Detroit Tigers looked like a team that had finally found traction again.
Dillon Dingler hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and Detroit rode it to a 4-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday in the doubleheader nightcap. The result stopped the Tigers’ eight-game losing streak, and it came after an extended stretch that had Detroit seeking answers.
Detroit’s comeback wasn’t just about the homer. Troy Melton and two relievers combined on a three-hitter, limiting the Orioles throughout the game. Kevin McGonigle added a two-run single as the Tigers won for just the third time in 19 games. It also ended Detroit’s longest skid since August 2020. On the road, the Tigers are now 8-21.
The Orioles didn’t walk away empty-handed from the doubleheader. In the opener, Colton Cowser hit a three-run homer off Kenley Jansen with two outs in the ninth inning to lift Baltimore to a 5-3 victory.
Melton’s outing was part of the night’s turning point. Making his season debut after recovering from right elbow inflammation. he allowed two hits and Baltimore managed just a sacrifice fly from Samuel Basallo in 5 2/3 innings. Tyler Holton got four outs and Drew Anderson worked six innings in relief for his second save. striking out three straight batters after two walks started the ninth.
For Baltimore, Trevor Rogers’ struggles continued. He lost his sixth straight start, giving up four runs and four hits in 4 2/3 innings. During that span, his ERA climbed from 1.89 to 6.96.
Albert Suárez pitched four scoreless innings for the Orioles, but Detroit’s early momentum proved too hard to fully contain.
The next turn of the calendar brings new matchups for both teams. The Tigers will begin their series against the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday, with RHP Keider Montero (2-3, 3.83) starting. The Angels counter with RHP Jack Kochanowicz (2-3, 4.55).
Baltimore’s schedule shifts to a series opener against visiting Tampa Bay on Monday, with LHP Shane McClanahan (5-2, 2.82) taking the mound.

So they won 4-1 because of one homer? baseball really is just vibes sometimes.
Dingler doing the first inning thing again lol. Orioles always fall apart late though, like that Kenley Jansen part in the first game… smh. Can’t believe Detroit snapped the streak, good for them I guess.
Wait, I thought the Tigers’ losing streak was like way longer than 8 games? I’m confused. Also it says McGonigle had a two-run single but I swear I heard Dingler hit a grand slam? Maybe I’m mixing teams. Either way 4-1 is nice.
Troy Melton season debut and only two hits… but Baltimore still got that sacrifice fly and a couple other stuff? Feels like the article is talking in circles. And Rogers losing his sixth straight start, his ERA jumping from 1.89 to 6.96 is crazy, like what happened. Anyway Tigers better than I expected, but road record 8-21 like come on.
