How Delta SkyMiles can be earned

Earning SkyMiles can start with the obvious: flying. Delta says that when you fly Delta on a Delta-issued ticket in the main cabin or above (basic economy fares don’t earn miles). you earn SkyMiles on the base price of your ticket. The earning rate changes with elite status: General members earn 5 miles per dollar. while Silver Medallion members earn 7 miles per dollar. Gold Medallion members earn 8 miles per dollar. Platinum Medallion members earn 9 miles per dollar. and Diamond Medallion members earn 11 miles per dollar.

There’s also earning when you book partner flights. When you book a partner flight through that carrier’s website—Air France is given as an example—and you add your Delta SkyMiles number. you earn miles based on a percentage of the distance flown. The exact amount varies by partner, booking class and your elite status.

The program also spells out other ways to earn, including shopping and point transfers.

Delta SkyMiles Shopping portal: how it works

Delta SkyMiles Shopping is presented as one of the easiest ways to earn miles online. The portal lets you earn miles on purchases you would ordinarily make with over a thousand merchants online. If you don’t already have an account, you must register using your SkyMiles number. You can search for stores and products. compare prices and mileage rates. and favorite stores to get notified when bonus miles are offered.

After selecting a merchant, you click through to the store’s website to shop and check out. The store alerts the portal when a purchase is made, and the miles are added to your SkyMiles account. A confirmation email is typically sent when miles post—usually within three to five days. but it can take up to 15 days.

Transfer Amex points to Delta at 1:1

image

The program also includes a direct route for American Express Membership Rewards points. You can transfer Amex points to your Delta SkyMiles account at a 1:1 ratio. The text also cautions that it’s usually not recommended because American Express points are valued higher than SkyMiles.

It also points to friction in the transfer process, saying it can be difficult to get a higher fare from Delta due to dynamic pricing. It adds that you’ll have to pay an excise tax offset fee when transferring Amex points to Delta and other domestic frequent flyer programs.

Redeeming SkyMiles under dynamic pricing

Redeeming SkyMiles is where Delta’s modern pricing style shows. Delta uses dynamic pricing for award tickets. meaning you have to search on the Delta website or app to see how many SkyMiles are needed for an award ticket. The text says Delta’s site is easy to navigate. and its calendar feature can help find the lowest prices for redemptions.

The best redemptions, the guidance says, are generally on domestic flights. It also explains how a Delta cobranded card offering a 15% discount on Delta-operated award tickets can sometimes help short-haul flights land for under 4. 000 SkyMiles one-way—though prices vary by day. route and cabin class.

image

Flexibility matters too. Delta award tickets are fully refundable for flights originating in the U.S. and Canada, excluding basic economy fares. If plans change, you can redeposit the miles and get a refund for the taxes and fees you paid. The same policy is described as a way to rebook when mileage prices drop. securing a refund of the difference in miles.

Partner awards are still an option, but the text says they’ve largely aligned with Delta’s own flight prices. It describes that as limiting the chance of finding better value from partner awards, especially in premium cabins.

Where “sweet spots” still show up

With dynamic pricing across Delta’s route network, the text says there aren’t many easy places to maximize value. Still, it points to a few options.

Delta flash sales are one. The airline runs SkyMiles flash sales for short- and long-haul routes to U.S. destinations and cities in Europe, Asia and the Caribbean. Past deals mentioned include round-trip flights to Europe for just 34. 000 miles and fares to Tahiti in French Polynesia starting at 60. 000 miles.

The guidance adds that cheap tickets aren’t always well advertised, so it’s worth checking availability often. It also says Delta frequently prices short-haul award tickets well under what other airlines would charge for similar flights. and that the best deals show up when booking in advance and traveling on off-peak dates.

The state of the program now

Delta is often described as a top domestic airline, and the text says the carrier took the top spot in TPG’s analysis of the best airlines in the U.S. for the last eight years. It also acknowledges that award pricing and elite status requirements have disappointed many Delta loyalists.

Even with those caveats. the program’s pitch remains consistent: frequent Delta flyers and casual travelers can build balances by mixing flying. online shopping portals and purchases with Delta credit cards. then redeeming through Delta’s dynamic award system. The practical takeaway is straightforward—if you want SkyMiles to matter for your next trip. the path runs through the balance you build and the searches you do before you book.

For those looking to match the program to their travel patterns. the text directs readers to specific rate and fee pages for the Delta SkyMiles Gold card. Delta SkyMiles Platinum card. Delta SkyMiles Reserve card. Delta SkyMiles Gold Business card. Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business card and Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business card.

  1. Is it really 1.2 cents each or are they just saying that to make it sound better? I tried redeeming once and it felt like 1 mile was worth like 2 cents of suffering.

  2. Wait, “dynamic award pricing” means the rewards go up every day right? So you could book the same flight one week and it costs more miles next week, which is kinda BS. Also Delta says miles never expire but does your status still just disappear if you don’t fly for a bit?

  3. Medallion Qualification Dollars… I swear they make it confusing on purpose. Like why not just say how many flights? I saw something about Amex transfers and thought you can only do it if you have the premium card, but then the guide makes it sound like any transfer works. Also “Delta 360” sounds like those subscription things where they charge you after the invite or whatever.
