CNN Panel Struggles to Contain Laughter Over Trump Claim

Thursday night on CNN’s “NewsNight,” Abby Phillip couldn’t finish the story without losing it.

She brought the room to laughter with an anecdote from a forthcoming book. “Regime Change. ” written by New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan. In the book. the journalists described a moment involving Donald Trump and a document Trump presented as proof of his own power—one that. as Phillip recounted it. Trump said placed him above some of history’s most feared rulers. Among the names mentioned in the account was Adolf Hitler.

Phillip said the punchline wasn’t just the claim. She described how Trump has since shared the document on his Truth Social platform, where he said it came from a presidential historian named Dave King.

But Phillip said that version didn’t match what the document actually was. The document, she said, was written by the “longtime caddy and personal confidant” of golf Hall of Famer Gary Player.

As she wrapped up the account, Phillip laughed—then tried to stop the laughter from turning it into a joke. “It’s not a joke,” she said. “This actually happened.”

Pundit Xochitl Hinojosa, a former spokesperson for the Democratic National Committee, also reacted with a burst of incredulity. She laughed and said: “This is the president of the United States.”

The panel’s inability to stay serious underscored the central tension of the story itself: Trump’s public framing of the document’s provenance, and the account of how the text was described in the forthcoming book.

  1. CNN losing it over something is honestly kinda pathetic like y’all are supposed to be reporting not laughing. Also why is Trump showing random documents on Truth Social like that isn’t a red flag?

  2. If it says Dave King then it probably came from somewhere, right? I mean historians and caddies always have weird connections. But “above Hitler” sounds like clickbait wording, like they’re exaggerating what the document even said.

  3. This is the problem with politics now, everything turns into a meme. Abby Phillip couldn’t finish the story because it’s so absurd, and I get it, but also Trump is literally the president?? Like why are we even talking about a “document” tied to Gary Player’s caddy. Dave King or whatever, doesn’t matter, the whole thing sounds made up.
