Deion Sanders Jr. Defends Dad Amid Own Financial Struggles

Deion Sanders Jr. says his father, NFL legend Deion Sanders, lives by one rule: if you don’t have money, go make it. The comment comes as Deion Sr. also navigates family support through a bladder cancer recovery, with Deion Jr. by his side from diagnosis to a
On the Friday, May 22 episode of the “Organikally Speaking Podcast,” Deion Sanders Jr. didn’t just defend his father’s parenting style — he laid out the philosophy in plain, uncompromising terms.
“My dad, my dad is a real live man; he’s a legit man,” Deion Jr., 32, said. “So he raises kids to be men, which is actually rare these days. If you don’t have any money? Go. Do something about it. Why are you even telling me? You’re a man.”
Then he got specific about what that means at home. In Deion Jr.’s telling. his father means what he says even when Deion Jr.’s bank account is “nearing the single-digits.” The point wasn’t just to share a lesson — it was to show how deeply his dad ties responsibility to respect. and how quickly help is swapped for expectation.
Deion Jr. explained that the attitude isn’t the gentle version people assume. “So it’s not, ‘I can’t pay rent this month,’” he said. “He’s not the handout guy. It’s worse when everyone thinks you have money because your name is Sanders. I got like $11 in my account, and one of my accounts is in the negative.”.
That image — a bank balance around $11, one account in the red — clashes with the public picture people build around famous last names. For Deion Jr., it’s also why the family’s dynamic can feel intense: Deion Sr. isn’t refusing care so much as pushing harder on self-reliance.
The same week Deion Jr. described his father’s rules for money, Deion Sr.’s parenting and loyalty were already on display in another way. When Deion Jr. learned of Deion Sr.’s bladder cancer diagnosis in April 2025, he was by his dad’s side. By July of that year, two months after successful bladder surgery, Deion Sr. thanked his son during a press conference.
“Much love to my son Junior. who has not left my side since we found out what was taking place. ” Deion Sr. said. “Not one day. He’s been with me here. he’s been with me in Texas. he’s been with me everywhere. everyday.” He followed that with. “I love you for life. son. and I thank you for everything you bring to the table.”.
Later in the same press conference, Dr. Janet Kukreja — director of urological oncology at the University of Colorado — announced that the coach was “cured.”
Deion Sr. has also been open about his family’s roles in public before. In an interview with Robert Griffin III in 2024, he referred to Deion Jr. as the MVP of the family.
At the start of the 2025 football season, Deion Sr. was back on the sidelines less than four months after his bladder cancer surgery. returning to the University of Colorado at Folsom Field in Boulder. Colorado. on Friday. August 29. as the Colorado Buffaloes prepared to take on Georgia Tech. When asked about his sons, he said: “Junior is the calm [one]. The older one to look out for the younger brothers,” adding, “The MVP is Junior, because he keeps it together. He keeps them together. He’s always selfless and gives them unconditional love to try to make sure they shine at all times. The unity that they have and seeing that as a father is unbelievable.”.
Deion Sr. and his ex-wife, Carolyn Chambers, have a daughter, Deiondra, and were married from 1989 to 1998. He married Pilar Biggers-Sanders a year later, and they share sons Shilo, 26, and Shedeur, 24, as well as daughter Shelomi, 22. Deion Sr. and Biggers-Sanders finalized their divorce in 2013. He is currently dating actress and model Karrueche Tran.
What threads through all of it — the financial candor on a podcast and the medical support during cancer recovery — is the same insistence on how his family should carry itself. Deion Jr. can describe having “like $11” in his account, and Deion Sr. can still insist his son shouldn’t wait for a handout. And when it matters most, the man Deion Jr. calls a “legit” father shows up in real time, day after day, until the doctors can say “cured.”.

Bro $11?? That seems fake or whatever.
I don’t even know what to think. Like if your dad has bladder cancer recovery you would think he’d get help, not be like “go make money”?? But I guess it’s a mindset thing.
Wait so Deion Sr is recovering and Deion Jr is saying he’s basically strict like “you’re a man”?? That sounds toxic lowkey. And people are like yeah famous name = money, but that part about accounts in the negative… idk, why would they keep talking about it then.
This is why I don’t trust “rules” from rich athletes, sorry. Like just because you’re Deion Sanders doesn’t mean you’re not suffering financially?? Also bladder cancer recovery already sounds like a lot, and now it’s all parenting philosophy on a podcast, I’m confused. Are we supposed to clap for him being tough or what? My cousin’s husband said something similar and then they ended up needing a GoFundMe so…
