Deb Haaland projected to win New Mexico Democratic primary

Deb Haaland is projected to win Tuesday’s Democratic primary for governor of New Mexico, setting up what could become a historic November election and keeping the governor’s office in Democratic hands.
On Tuesday night. New Mexico Democrats were bracing for a result that would shape the fall campaign fast: Deb Haaland. a former interior secretary under President Joe Biden. was projected to win the Democratic primary for governor—an outcome that puts her on a glide path toward making history in November.
If she wins the general election, Haaland would become the country’s first Native American woman elected governor. She is running to succeed Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, who is term-limited out.
Haaland was widely expected to defeat her main primary opponent, Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman. The race also carried a familiar kind of momentum: Haaland’s national name recognition and her fundraising advantage were baked into the campaign from the start. She raised nearly $12 million over the course of her run, compared to Bregman’s $4.1 million.
That financial edge matched the early political picture. Haaland consistently led in polling by double digits, and she entered the final stretch with endorsements from all three of the state’s congressional members—every one of them Democrats—along with Sen. Ben Ray Lujan (D-N.M.).
Not every prominent Democrat lined up. Martin Heinrich, New Mexico’s other senator, did not endorse in this race. Heinrich was reportedly mulling a bid for governor himself, but he announced in January 2025 that he would be staying in the Senate.
With the primary outcome in reach, the bigger stakes moved quickly into view. The governor’s seat is expected to stay in Democrats’ hands, with Cook Political Report rating the seat “likely” Democratic. That assessment means Haaland is positioned to defeat the Republican nominee in November.
For Haaland. the campaign message has been anchored in her own story as she tries to broaden the coalition beyond party insiders. Emphasizing her background as a single mom. she campaigned on improving public education. making life more affordable. improving public safety. and standing up to President Donald Trump’s authoritarianism.
In a recent campaign ad, Haaland framed the race as a fight for everyday families, saying, “I’m running for governor to defend our New Mexico family. When Donald Trump tries to push us down, I’ll lift New Mexico up.”
The sequence of the campaign—national profile. a strong fundraising haul. double-digit polling leads. and a tight circle of endorsements—left little room for doubt about how the Democratic side of the ticket was taking shape. Now. the focus turns to whether the same forces that built her path through the primary can carry her through the general election and into the historic milestone supporters have been watching for.

So she’s projected to win already? Seems fixed.
I don’t even know who Sam Bregman is but the article makes it sound like money decided it. Like why bother with primaries then.
First Native American woman elected governor… that’s awesome, but I’m confused why it says projected like it’s guaranteed. Also “former interior secretary” like that means she runs all the land? maybe.
Martin Heinrich not endorsing makes me think he’ll jump back in or something, even if he said he’s staying. And the fundraising gap ($12M vs $4.1M) is insane, so of course she leads by double digits… just saying. New Mexico politics always feels like a done deal once the headlines hit.
