Dean McDermott didn’t just post a milestone—he turned it into a message for anyone who feels trapped.
On Friday, the actor shared a video to Instagram, calling himself “Clean Dean,” and celebrating his third anniversary of sobriety. He said he’s been in such a great mood because he’s hitting that full three-year mark.
In the clip, McDermott made it clear he wasn’t sharing the moment for celebration alone. He wanted people to know getting clean is possible. “Hell has an exit,” he said, adding that if he can do it, then “so can normal people out there,” but they have to reach out their hands and ask for help.
The caption landed with the weight of gratitude. McDermott wrote, “WOW we wee WOW!!. 3 years!!. Couldn’t have done it without my Family, Friends, Fellowship, Sponsor and a 12 step program!!. It all started with surrendering and asking for help. The best decision I’ve ever made. If you’re struggling, reach out. I love you all.”.
His recovery didn’t begin overnight. He previously dealt with substance abuse issues for years, including entering rehab in 2014. In 2023, he “really dove into his recovery,” around the time he and Tori Spelling split.
As the years passed, McDermott also described the fallout of addiction—telling stories about alcohol-fueled rages that scared Tori and their kids a lot. In this new video, he shifted toward what he’s building now, saying he’s busy working on rebuilding his relationship with his children.
A few recent moments suggest that rebuilding is also happening in real life, not just in words. McDermott and Spelling recently reunited for their daughter Stella’s high school graduation, and in the process it seems they’re trying to keep things civil—something sobriety may be helping support.
For now, McDermott’s focus is simple and direct: three years sober, a thank-you list that runs through the people who held him up, and a reminder to anyone struggling that help is within reach.
