A parent’s report set off a rapid chain of events at Mustard Seed Kidz in West Melbourne—starting with an allegation that a child was inappropriately struck in the classroom on May 27, and quickly escalating into a full police investigation.
Latasha Mullings, 41, is now at the center of that investigation. Authorities say she faces 11 counts of misdemeanor battery and one count of misdemeanor assault with intent to do violence, stemming from what officials describe as troubling incidents involving multiple young children.
The case began when a parent alerted the school director on May 27. Investigators say the allegation prompted an internal review at the daycare and led to immediate notification of police. From there, investigators turned to classroom surveillance footage, reviewing incidents captured between May 19 and May 26.
What the footage allegedly shows is at the heart of the charges. Law enforcement says the video reveals repeated physical incidents involving children between the ages of 2 and 4. Officials also describe the concerns as worsening during that period, pointing to multiple concerning interactions in the classroom.
Administrators and investigators say the surveillance captured aggressive physical contact—including striking and other forceful interactions with young students. Many of the children, authorities allege, appeared visibly distressed during the incidents.
As the findings came in, the consequences were immediate. Mullings’ employment was terminated by administrators, and both law enforcement and state child welfare officials were notified as the investigation moved forward.
Mullings was released on bond after being charged, as the case continues.
