David Sullivan resigns instantly from West Ham amid allegations

West Ham joint-chairman David Sullivan has resigned with immediate effect after saying “decades-old” allegations about his personal life are set to be published, which he calls “factually incorrect and entirely false.” The 77-year-old, who has led the club sin

David Sullivan walked away from his role at West Ham with immediate effect, stepping down as joint-chair and director while the club braces for a new day—one he says will not be shaped by him.

The 77-year-old chairman. who has been in charge of the club for 16 years. confirmed his resignation in a statement issued through his lawyers. He said he had become aware that “factually incorrect and entirely false. decades-old allegations concerning my personal life are due to be broadcast and published.”.

Sullivan did not mince words. He described the allegations as “sensationalised by the media. ” arguing that the adult-industry businesses he has spent a lifetime building—where he claims to have met thousands of women—make it “sadly inevitable” that “a small number of improper conduct claims are being made against me.” He “categorically deny[ies] these claims. ” adding that he has not been given “any proper explanation” for how individuals or their claims were “independently verified or assessed for credibility prior to publication.”.

He also said the process had been “fundamentally unfair and completely lacking in any due impartiality.” His legal resolve was equally clear: Sullivan said he will be suing the BBC for libel, along with any other media outlet that repeats “any libelous allegations.”

For Sullivan. the move is also about separating his own fight from the club he says he has devoted himself to. “None of these allegations relate to my more than 30 years in football,” he wrote. West Ham United. he said. has been “one of the greatest passions and privileges of my life. ” and he insisted he “care[s] deeply about the club. its supporters. its players. its staff. and its future.”.

He framed the timing as a chance to keep focus. “At what is already a challenging and important time for the club, I refuse to allow personal matters concerning me to become an unnecessary distraction or a source of instability.”

That challenge is immediate and stark. Sullivan was recently in attendance at the London Stadium for West Ham’s last game of the season against Leeds. when it was confirmed that the club were to be relegated from the top-flight. Sullivan’s resignation came after that confirmation. with him saying: “Therefore. after very careful consideration and with a heavy heart. I have decided to resign as Joint-Chair and Director of West Ham United FC with immediate effect.”.

Sullivan called the decision “incredibly painful. ” describing it as something made “out of love. respect. and responsibility toward a football club and a fan base that deserve absolute unity and focus moving forward.” He said he was stepping down so he could apply “full energy and attention” to fighting the “false allegations. ” adding that he has “officially engaged my legal team” and is preparing to issue legal proceedings in respect of each and every “false complaint” made against him.

“I will be seeking full redress, legally and publicly, on every single front,” Sullivan said. He added that he would not make further public comment at this stage, while reserving “all legal rights available” in relation to “any false or defamatory allegations.”

West Ham’s own statement matched his message, confirming the same names and timing. It said: “West Ham United can confirm that Joint-Chair David Sullivan has stepped down from his position with immediate effect.” The club added that Sullivan had also resigned as a director of both WH Holding Limited and West Ham United Football Club. having been made aware of the impending publication of “serious historic allegations.” The club stated it is understood that “none of the allegations relate to West Ham United or any of its operations.”.

The club said Sullivan denies any illegal conduct through his legal representatives and that he stepped down “to avoid disruption to the Club while he addresses the matter privately.”

For the day-to-day leadership. interim chief executive officer Karim Virani will continue to be responsible for leading the club’s operations. reporting into the current Board of Directors. West Ham said it will provide an update on the future structure of the Board of Directors “in due course. ” but will make “no further comment at this time.”.

Sullivan’s tenure has been inseparable from recent West Ham turbulence. He has been in charge since 2010. when he bought a 50 per cent share in West Ham with the late David Gold. Even now, he remains the club’s biggest shareholder, and West Ham were relegated from the Premier League last month. Throughout a dismal season at the London Stadium. Sullivan—alongside former vice-chair Karren Brady—has been targeted by criticism from sections of West Ham’s support.

That pressure has not eased behind the scenes either. In April, he lost his right-hand woman when Baroness Karren Brady stepped down as vice chair; she had also spent 16 years with West Ham.

In his final remarks to the club. Sullivan thanked everyone connected with West Ham United—past and present—for their loyalty. friendship. memories. and “European adventures and successes.” He said West Ham would always remain “close to my heart. ” and he expressed “total confidence” that the Board of Directors and interim chief executive officer Karim Virani “will do everything they can to take the club forward in the right direction.”.

  1. BBC about to ruin another old guy’s reputation, right? But also I can’t tell what’s actually being claimed, just “improper conduct” like ok sure.

  2. If he’s suing for libel then maybe he’s right? I mean it says he says it’s false and “sensationalised”… but newspapers do that anyway. Also “met thousands of women” ??? That part feels like he’s bragging while playing victim.

  3. So he resigns immediately before it gets “broadcast and published” like it’s some surprise? Sounds like they already had the proof and he didn’t like it. I read something similar once where adult industry connections equals allegations no matter what, like people just assume stuff.
