Dario Amodei runs Anthropic with one direct report

Anthropic co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei says he has only one direct report—his chief of staff—while the rest of the executive team answers to his sister and co-founder Daniela Amodei, who runs day-to-day operations.

Dario Amodei’s leadership structure is unusual enough to make other AI founders do a double take. The co-founder who sits atop one of the world’s fastest-growing AI companies—valued by private market investors at roughly the trillion-dollar mark a little more than five years after it was founded—has built an organization that keeps him remarkably insulated from the usual churn of management.

In a new sit-down with Bloomberg’s Emily Chang, Amodei said he has just one direct report. That person is his chief of staff. Everyone else on Anthropic’s executive team, he explained, reports to his sister and co-founder Daniela Amodei, who handles day-to-day operations.

Amodei described the setup as a kind of release from the constant pull of people management. “Anyone who has managed a large team knows that the people side of the job has a way of consuming everything else. ” he told Chang. With the arrangement. he said he can focus almost entirely on strategy. culture. research direction. and the kinds of long-form reflections that veer into sweeping essays about the future of civilization. complete with footnotes.

“It’s incredibly freeing,” he said.

The contrast is stark. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reportedly has around half a dozen direct reports, a structure that fits the more standard playbook for leaders scaling fast. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, another extreme outlier, has many dozens.

In Anthropic’s case, Amodei’s one-report chain is what changes the texture of the job. Strategy and research direction move to the front of his calendar. while day-to-day execution stays with the executive team that reports through Daniela Amodei. The result is less distance between top-level thinking and the company’s research goals. and more separation between that work and the constant logistics of running people.

For a company moving at the speed of one of the industry’s biggest private valuations, it’s also a window into how leadership power is being organized: not just who decides, but how the work is routed to decision-makers—down to the number of direct reports on the other side of the table.

  2. I don’t get why people act like this is some genius strategy. If he’s “insulated” then how do they even communicate? Sounds like a recipe for delays.

  3. Wait so the chief of staff is the only person he talks to but then “strategy and culture” is all him… okay so who actually writes the code? Sounds like they’re just playing management games.

  4. This is like when my cousin said her boss has 1 assistant so everything runs smoothly… until it doesn’t. Like, “only one direct report” doesn’t automatically mean better, it just means less visibility. Also the article makes it sound normal when it’s literally his sister running day to day? I’m sure it’s fine but idk.
