Marc Cucurella’s next chapter is being written in Madrid — and it is already moving faster than Chelsea expected.

After this summer’s World Cup, the left back is set to join Real Madrid following a verbal agreement Chelsea have reached with the Spanish giants. The deal is understood to be for around £52million.

Chelsea had not been actively looking to sell the defender. but a sale became possible if an acceptable bid arrived and Cucurella wanted to move. The idea wasn’t completely new for the 26-year-old either. In March. Cucurella admitted he would have to consider any proposal made to him. while insisting he was happy at Chelsea. He also conceded he wanted to return to Spain at some point in his career.

The timing of the move has added extra heat inside the squad. Days after Enzo Fernandez cast doubt on his Chelsea future. the Argentina midfielder revealed he would like to live in Madrid one day in an interview. Fernandez was dropped for two matches by Chelsea over his comments — but Cucurella’s transfer news still landed with a kind of quiet inevitability.

On social media, Fernandez liked a post confirming Real Madrid had agreed a deal for Cucurella, effectively backing the exit as speculation turned into confirmation.

Cucurella’s path to this moment began in Barcelona’s academy, before he joined Brighton. Chelsea then paid £60m to sign him in 2022, and he went on to make 163 appearances for the club.

For Real Madrid. the agreement places Cucurella among the early signings linked to Jose Mourinho’s second spell as boss at the club. made official earlier this week. The World Cup now becomes the final stage before the deal becomes fully real — and before Chelsea have to absorb the loss of a player who arrived with a statement fee and built a regular place over multiple seasons.
