Cubs place Cabrera on IL, Wicks called up

Cubs put – Edward Cabrera was placed on the Cubs’ 15-day injured list with a right middle-finger blister, retroactive to Thursday, and left-hander Jordan Wicks was called up from Triple-A Iowa after a run of strong work during his Iowa stint and rehab appearances.
When Cubs manager Craig Counsell stepped into his morning session with the media Sunday. the topic was already unavoidable: the team’s injured right-hander Edward Cabrera had thrown earlier in the day. and Counsell said he would check in again after the workout. The timing made the feeling clear before the official move landed.
The Cubs placed Cabrera on the 15-day injured list with a right middle-finger blister, retroactive to Thursday. At the same time, the team called up left-hander Jordan Wicks from Triple-A Iowa.
Cabrera’s last start ended with the injury. He left after throwing three-plus innings Wednesday in the Cubs’ 5-0 loss to the Brewers. During that outing, Counsell said he pulled Cabrera after one pitch in the fourth inning—an apparent fastball that sailed and lacked his usual velocity.
That setback landed on top of a rotation that was already operating short-handed. Matthew Boyd is on the 15-day IL with a left knee issue. Justin Steele is shut down with a left elbow problem. Cade Horton remains out for the season with a right forearm injury.
In 10 starts for the Cubs spanning 54 innings, Cabrera is 3-2 with a 4.00 ERA, 47 strikeouts and 20 walks. Opponents are hitting .262 against him.
For Wicks, the call-up follows a steady stretch in his time with Iowa. In seven starts across 26 1/3 innings, he has a 4.44 ERA with 20 strikeouts and 12 walks, and a .282 opponent batting average. The run includes five rehab appearances.
Wicks’ season itself has carried its own detour. He began the year on the injured list with inflammation in his left elbow and was reinstated and optioned to Triple-A on May 15. In his last three games with Iowa—15 innings—he has allowed one run while striking out 12 batters.
The sequence is simple: Cabrera’s blister sidelined him just as the Cubs’ rotation already had multiple names out. and Wicks—fresh off rehab and recent form—was the next piece to keep innings moving. With Cabrera backdated to Thursday on the IL and the Cubs still absorbing Steele. Boyd. and Horton’s absences. the next question is how quickly Wicks can bridge the gap as the team tries to stabilize a staff that’s been stretched thin.
