Cruise ship rescues nine after distress flag off Florida

The Carnival Mardi Gras spotted a distress flag off Florida’s coast, notified the U.S. Coast Guard, and safely brought nine adults aboard before transferring them to Bahamian authorities in Nassau.

For the crew aboard the Carnival Mardi Gras, a small flag at sea quickly turned into an emergency response.

Carnival Cruise Line says its ship was sailing off the coast of Sebastian Inlet, Florida, on May 16 when the crew spotted a vessel displaying a distress flag. The crew notified the U.S. Coast Guard and safely brought all nine adults aboard.

Carnival said the nine people remained in the ship’s care until the ship’s arrival in Nassau, Bahamas on Sunday afternoon, where they disembarked the vessel with Bahamian authorities.

The U.S. Coast Guard Southeast District said its watchstanders maintained communication with the cruise ship and coordinated with authorities in the Bahamas to facilitate the safe transfer of the nine individuals upon the ship’s arrival.

Carnival and the Coast Guard did not identify the people who were rescued.

At the time of the rescue, Carnival Mardi Gras was operating Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral, according to CruiseMapper.

The sequence of recent incidents underscores how quickly cruises can shift from routine travel to lifesaving coordination at sea. In February, Princess Cruises’ Regal Princess rescued four people from a small vessel in distress during a Caribbean cruise. Earlier that month. Carnival Celebration responded to another small vessel in distress while on its way to Cozumel. Mexico. and brought five people aboard.

For this latest rescue, the operational details were clear: a distress flag was spotted, the Coast Guard was alerted, the nine adults were brought aboard, and authorities in the Bahamas handled the final transfer after the ship arrived in Nassau.

The news landed quietly on passenger schedules and at sea—until the moment the flag appeared and the crew acted.
