Courteney Cox didn’t just post a message after James Burrows’ death—she went straight to the memories. The Friends star shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram after the TV director and producer died on Friday, June 19.

Burrows helmed 15 episodes of Friends across the comedy series’ first four seasons, including the very first four episodes. Cox wrote about how he guided the cast from the start—calling him “Jimmy B” and saying he once nicknamed her “Cox-N-Hammer.” She said she didn’t know why or what it meant. but that she “just went with it. ” because he was “Jimmy Burrows.”.

In her post. Cox remembered how Burrows treated the cast like “the kids.” She described him as taking the cast “under his wing. ” teaching them everything they needed to know—through direction and even through the way he talked about what would unfold in their lives. “never sugar-coating anything and he was always right.”.

She also wrote that she begged him to make more time to direct them, but said others from his other shows wanted the same. “Everything was better when he was around,” Cox wrote, adding that his presence made the work feel “safe and confident.”

Cox then praised Burrows for the kind of talent she says came without ego. She wrote that she was “not sure how someone with that much talent. wisdom. and adoration could be so egoless. ” saying making everything the best it could be mattered most to him—along with his “wonderful kids and his beautiful wife. Debbie.” She closed by saying. “I will miss you so much Jimmy… the joy and laughter you brought to everyone who knew you. ” and adding. “I know your light will always be shining on us.”.

Matt LeBlanc also shared a tribute from his own Instagram account. He posted a picture of himself with Burrows at what appears to be a concert. writing. “Jimmy. words cannot describe the impact and influence you had on us and everyone who was lucky enough to have known you. You sir are a true icon on so many levels. Well wishes in your next act. You will be missed. God Bless.”.

Burrows’ impact stretched well beyond Friends. His directing credits included Frasier. Will & Grace. Partners. Men Behaving Badly. Dharma & Greg. Cheers. and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. among many others. He also appeared on screen in episodes of Cheers. Rhoda. Friends. Phyllis. The Bob Newhart Show. Will & Grace. and most recently. as himself in The Comeback season three.

The outpouring of tributes continued across the Friends world, with Jennifer Aniston also sharing her own tribute to Burrows.

  1. Courteney Cox calling him “Jimmy B” and then “Cox-N-Hammer”?? I’m sorry but that sounds made up or like a behind-the-scenes thing everyone already knew. But yeah, sad he passed.

  2. I don’t even remember James Burrows like visually, but I guess he’s the one who “made everything safe and confident”?? sounds like he was basically a therapist on set lol. Matt LeBlanc mourning too though, so that’s something.

  3. RIP. Also can we talk about how no one else could “make time to direct them” like… was he always busy with other shows or did they just not appreciate him enough? The whole ego-less talent thing is nice but I’m like if “he was always right” then why did everything end the way it did??
