Convert currencies fast on iPhone’s built-in Calculator

convert currency – You don’t need a new app to convert money while traveling. Apple’s built-in iPhone Calculator includes a Convert function that pulls exchange rates from Yahoo Finance when you’re online, with steps for iPhone, iPad, and Mac—plus what to check if it’s not worki

On a trip, currency math can turn into a time sink fast—especially when you’re standing in a store or heading to a taxi and the internet is spotty. The quickest fix is already on your iPhone.

Apple’s Calculator app includes a built-in conversion feature for more than just money. With just a few taps, it can convert currency, temperature, distance, fuel and more. There’s no frantic web search, and no need to download an extra app while you’re in a different country.

To convert currencies on your iPhone or iPad:

Open the Calculator app. Tap the calculator icon in the top right corner. Tap Convert. Tap the letters—or use the up and down carat—on the display line. The exact letters vary depending on the calculator’s default or the last used setting. Look for currency and select the currencies you need. Tap the line corresponding to the currency you want translated and input the number. The selected currency shows in white while the other is grey. To switch, tap the other line or use the up and down arrow on the left. Type your numbers and it converts immediately.

If you’re using a computer, the steps are similar: open the Calculator app and select Convert from the toolbar, then choose Currency from the menu to pick the currencies you want to convert.

The exchange rate comes from Yahoo Finance. It’s most up to date when the device is connected to the internet, and you can see when the data was last updated by checking the “Updated” line above the search bar at the bottom—followed by the date or time of the last refresh.

The feature can also work offline and without Wi‑Fi or cellular data. Still, the rate needs to be current before you disconnect.

For travelers who prefer a different approach—especially when budgeting multiple stops—the same iPhone ecosystem offers a way to track totals in Apple Notes. If you’re adding up flights, hotels, rental cars, meals, taxis, and more, you can simplify tallying by writing entries like:

Flight = $588
Hotel = $423 x 4
Car = $300 x4
Meals = $200 x 6

You’ll know it’s working when the words turn yellow. Then you can calculate a grand total by typing:

Total = Flight + hotel + car + meals

The total appears automatically, and it updates if you add anything to the formula—whether you include extra multiplications or divisions.

If you’re splitting costs, you can assign individual names to equations. For example:

Cody = (car / 3) + (hotel / 1) + (meals /2)

In that case, “Cody = ” will populate with the total after the equal sign.

The note shows across all synced iCloud devices. You can also make it a Shared Note so everyone on the trip can keep track.

If any of these features aren’t working, check your device’s operating system. Math Notes requires iOS X or later, iPadOS 18 or later, and macOS Sequoia 15 or later.
